Amazing Hockey MM Romance

This is a top-tier MM hockey romance in my opinion. it's relatively low-angst, a steamy friends-to-lovers story with lots of insecure introspection and sugary-sweet feelings. Burke and Shaw are discovering their sexuality together and realizing that their deep friendship is even more meaningful than they had realized, and they're so endearing. I love their friend group/roommates as well, and hope we get to hear more about them in future books. Narration is great, even if Liam Dicosimo's accent for Burke is a little off (though I'm actually from "the Delta," where Burke is supposed to be from, so I'm probably pickier than most). I have loved this story since I first read it, so I was delighted to have these characters brought to life! Can't wait to listen again and again ❤️

I've read a lot of MM hockey romances in the past year, and this one (my first CE Ricci read) ranks among the best of them. Two college teammates who can't stand one another, but find themselves in a situation where they're drawn to each other anyway. The angst in this book isn't non-existent, but it's pretty low-key; at least, the bigger conflict is pretty quickly resolved. (I personally am not a fan of reading books where characters are pining and miserable and miscommunicating the ENTIRE time, so I really appreciated this about Iced Out). The hockey scenes are good, the steamy scenes are GREAT, and the narration is outstanding. There are 4 more books planned for this series, featuring some characters introduced in this volume (not all hockey, but all college MM sports romances, as far as I can tell), so I cannot wait!

A Note on the (Excellent) Narration

I can't add much to the other reviews, but wanted to note: There were a few points in this book where Ilya's accent sort of.. disappeared, and at first I was so confused. Then I realized that every single one of these sections was depicting a conversation between Ilya and another native Russian speaker. So, even though we're hearing the English translation of these conversations, Ilya and the other character are really speaking in Russian with one another so of course, they WOULDN'T actually have any sort of strong accent when speaking with one another... I thought this was just an example of the genius narration.

The story of the continuation of Ilya and Shane's relationship gets a little heavier or angstier here than it was in Heated Rivalry, but it seems realistic, and the payoff is so worth it. I love this love story.

I've listened to all the HP content available on Audible so many times that I can quote every other line, and I needed something new. ATYD is SO good and feels more tied to the original books than either The Cursed Child or any of the new Fantastic Beasts movies. This narrator does an excellent job - professional, yet accessible. I feel like an old friend is just reading the fanfic to me. Thank you so much for reading this aloud for us - I'm so glad I found it, even if I'm late to the game.

This is my favorite Stephen King novel ever. While King usually tends toward the supernatural, I feel that this book more deeply explores human nature, which is more interesting/palatable for me. The narration is a bit lackluster. In particular, I'm annoyed by the narrator's refusal to "play along" when songs are included in the text (which is surprisingly often). The narrator unenthusiastically *speaks* the words to several popular songs, including the US national anthem, which takes away from the flow of the audio experience. Overall, this is a minor grievance, though; this epic, apocalyptic battle for humanity is worth the listen!
