Simon Cooper revisits the whole of the horse’s life, giving listeners an inside tour of the calm oasis that is life on a stud farm, where a foal will live with his mother for the first year of his life. Next, the atmosphere of heady possibility that marks the early days of training. Roadwork. Gallops. Trials. Turning raw potential into something more. Frankel begins to set himself apart.

(He has decided to live forever, even if he has to die in the attempt.)

I literally laughed and cried!
Revisado: 07-17-14
Would you listen to Catch-22 again? Why?
I would listen to my favorite parts of it again. The book is hilarious in parts and poignant in others.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved how Heller could have the reader/listener rolling in the aisles one second and then on a dime remind us just how scary war really is. This book was a roller coaster.
Which character – as performed by Jay O. Sanders – was your favorite?
It's a tie between Ore, the chaplain, and Major Major. For this question, though, I think Sanders's performance as Ore really brought out the essence of the character.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"That men must die is an inevitability. Which men must die is a matter of circumstance."
Any additional comments?
Sanders's performance really brings this book to life. Heller reads selections at the end, but his readings just feel so drab in comparison.

Historia
Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

Great performance of a troubling book
Revisado: 07-10-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Having a story that wasn't about having sex with a young girl. Honestly, I don't know why I stuck with this book.
What could Vladimir Nabokov have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not tried to justify paedophilia.
Which character – as performed by Jeremy Irons – was your favorite?
Honestly, I didn't really like any of the characters, though I love Jeremy Irons's voice.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Jeremy Irons's voice was the best quality of this audiobook.
Any additional comments?
This book really was as sickening as the rumors would have one believe.

Fun little stories

What made the experience of listening to No One Writes to the Colonel, and Other Stories the most enjoyable?
The stories were short and enjoyable, and some of them tied into other GGM works (particularly One Hundred Years of Solitude).

Rebeca Buendia, a carryover from One Hundred Years of Solitude, because I liked hearing from her again.
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
Gotta go with Rebeca again.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There were plenty of parts that made me laugh!

On the eve of his 90th birthday, a bachelor decides to give himself a wild night of love with a virgin. As is his habit - he has purchased hundreds of women - he asks a madam for her assistance. The 14-year-old girl who is procured for him is enchanting, but exhausted as she is from caring for siblings and her job sewing buttons, she can do little but sleep. Yet with this sleeping beauty at his side, it is he who awakens to a romance he has never known. Tender, knowing, and slyly comic, Memories of My Melancholy Whores is an exquisite addition to a master's work.

What a weird story
Revisado: 07-08-14
What did you like best about Memories of My Melancholy Whores? What did you like least?
I didn't like the idea that the guy wanted to have sex with a young virgin, but I did like that in the end he didn't do it.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I have no idea. Honestly, I loved the writing, but the subject matter was a little squicky. I don't know if I could change it and still keep anything similar.
What does Thom Rivera bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I liked his rusty voice. It made picturing the character easier.
Was Memories of My Melancholy Whores worth the listening time?
Ultimately, yes. It wasn't a long book, and it was interesting, if not the most favorable material.

Not as good as the other Gabriel Garcia Marquez works!

Historia
The Sound and the Fury is the tragedy of the Compson family, featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature: beautiful, rebellious Caddy; the manchild Benjy; haunted, neurotic Quentin; Jason, the brutal cynic; and Dilsey, their black servant. Their lives fragmented and harrowed by history and legacy, the character’s voices and actions mesh to create what is arguably Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Was I supposed to like this book?
Revisado: 07-08-14
What disappointed you about The Sound and the Fury?
It's a classic, but I found it so difficult to follow. Part of it was the displacement of time that I think would have been a lot easier to follow in print, since they used italics there. It was so jumbled.
Would you ever listen to anything by William Faulkner again?
I'd be very reluctant to.
What aspect of Grover Gardner’s performance would you have changed?
I would have had something delineate the difference between the timelines- a tone of voice, or some sort of mention.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Some of the characters were interesting.
Any additional comments?
I'm pretty sure that anyone who says that they actually enjoy this book just wants to sound smart.

Historia
Here is a tale straight from the fireside. We are compelled to follow the humble and mysterious figure of the linen weaver Silas Marner, on his journey from solitude and exile to the warmth and joy of family life. His path is a strange one; when he loses his hoard of hard-earned coins all seems to be lost, but in place of the golden guineas come the golden curls of a child - and from desolate misery comes triumphant joy.

Happy story!
Revisado: 07-08-14
What did you love best about Silas Marner?
I loved the very rustic and upbeat feel to the story. I usually don't like stories with happy endings as much, but this story was just so charming, and I loved Silas and Eppy so much!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Silas. He was a snot at the beginning but he grew to love his daughter, so I came to love him.
Have you listened to any of Anna Bentinck’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I haven't.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. I was very curious.
Any additional comments?
I want to find another happy book that I like as much!

Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes 'unstuck in time' after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.

Crazy book!
Revisado: 07-08-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Slaughterhouse-Five or The Children's Crusade to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version.
What did you like best about this story?
The time travel concept is very similar to some thoughts that my husband and I have had about the concept of time, so I think that is what appealed to me most.
Which character – as performed by Ethan Hawke – was your favorite?
Billy Pilgrim.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There were parts of it that made me laugh, but I didn't have an extreme reaction. I tend not to, no matter how much I like a book.

Historia
As in the original novel, the story follows two relationships: the tragic adulterous romance of Anna Karenina and Count Alexei Vronsky, and the much more hopeful marriage of Nikolai Levin and Kitty Shcherbatskaya. These four, yearning for true love, live in a steampunk-inspired 19th century of mechanical butlers, extraterrestrial-worshiping cults, and airborne debutante balls.

A very surprising and enjoyable read
Revisado: 07-08-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If they were at all interested in steampunk or classics, I would. It's quite a long read, but enjoyable for the right reader.
What did you like best about this story?
It kept me on the edge of my seat and had a lot of ambiguity, which I found interesting.
Which character – as performed by Susan Duerden – was your favorite?
Hmm, that's tough. Probably Levin (I don't think I spelled that correctly).
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Toward the end, yes. It was quite long, though.
Any additional comments?
I'm almost afraid to read Anna Karenina now, because I don't want it to be different from this book.

Historia
Boisterous, ribald, and ultimately shattering, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time. Turning conventional notions of sanity and insanity on their heads, the novel tells the unforgettable story of a mental ward and its inhabitants, especially tyrannical Big Nurse Ratched and Randle Patrick McMurphy, the brawling, fun-loving new inmate who resolves to oppose her.

What an entertaining book!
Revisado: 07-08-14
What made the experience of listening to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest the most enjoyable?
Definitely Reilly's interpretation of Randle. What a hoot!
What other book might you compare One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest to and why?
Anything having to do with psychology, fiction or not- especially if it's talking about outdated treatments, which remind me of some of the nurse's methods.
Which scene was your favorite?
Probably the scene at the gas station, when Randle is intimidating the attendants and using the mental illness diagnoses to the patients' benefits.
Who was the most memorable character of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and why?
Randle, duh! Nurse Ratched is also up there, and Chief.
