Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Compelling thesis, shoddy anecdotes
Revisado: 07-17-21
I saw the interview of the author by Oprah who recommended the book highly. The core pillars of caste were compelling. That was about the first half of the book. That was probably not long enough for the publisher I’d assume because the last half was chock full of anecdotes that required many layers of assumption in order for them to remain in tact evidence of race based cast. The way people in First class on a flight act, a thoughtless waiter enraging a table of patrons of different races, a plumber who is a jerk. I don’t disparage her personal experience, thoughts or beliefs about the events, just the low fidelity with which they were presented relative to the high fidelity, layered depths she goes in the pillars sections. It was really a shame because for me, she started to undermine herself. Making sweeping claims about humanity when it benefits her angle and then ignoring those very same blanket claims when they might weaken them. It began to feel all like a big facade of personal resentment vs a step change visionary leading the way. Thank you Oprah for highlighting the good in this book. It is too bad that the good was then twisted in knots and diluted by the end.

Historia
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

Nothing new here
Revisado: 06-12-21
Lots of old tropes from self help in the last 30 years or so recycled and rewrapped as self compassion. She tries to contrast with self esteem, but a particularly warped notion of self esteem that she rightfully observes is harmful to the individual and to society. However self compassion can also become warped over time and cause unintended consequences and harms not observed in conceptual form. Seems a bit like a rebuke on self esteem as it’s manifest in culture with subtle differences in approach that honestly could be used instead to reset the notions of self esteem instead of demonizing altogether. Kind of a waste of time!

Historia
A third-generation Jehovah's Witness, Amber Scorah had devoted her life to sounding God's warning of impending Armageddon. She volunteered to take the message to China, where the preaching she did was illegal and could result in her expulsion or worse. Here, she had some distance from her community for the first time. Immersion in a foreign language and culture - and a whole new way of thinking - turned her world upside down, and eventually led her to lose all that she had been sure was true.

Former Mormon Relates
Revisado: 01-31-20
Amber spoke at the Thrive post Mormonism conference in SLC in Nov 2019 and after her incredibly heart felt keynote, sold out of her books at the book signing so I went ahead and downloaded the audiobook for a listen on the go. As a former Mormon who served a two year mission in France, I could relate to her mind opening mission experience abroad. I started learning mandarin with the Chineasy app after listening to her stories in China. If you are having or had a faith crisis, or having trouble understanding a loved one who is, no matter where your faith is or is not, this will be a really great tool for gaining empathy and new ways of relating/ connecting. Great job, Amber :)

Historia
Discover magazine recently called Richard Dawkins "Darwin's Rottweiler" for his fierce and effective defense of evolution. Prospect magazine voted him among the top three public intellectuals in the world (along with Umberto Eco and Noam Chomsky). Now Dawkins turns his considerable intellect on religion, denouncing its faulty logic and the suffering it causes.

Overall great but a bit self contradictory
Revisado: 09-29-19
Dawkins and his wife did a great job keeping the content engaging throughout. I have changed many of my long held beliefs as a result of the rationale presented. However, I found some hypocrisy in the way they use ridicule to crack open irrational beliefs, but then not sharing the same measure of scrutiny toward beliefs they hold. It just rubbed me the wrong way because at the end of the day they are also human trying to persuade other humans using similar means of rhetoric we all use to persuade others in our favor.

Picking up where Bible expert Bart Ehrman's New York Times best seller, Misquoting Jesus, left off, Jesus, Interrupted addresses the larger issue of what the New Testament actually teaches...and it's not what most people think. This is the book that pastors, educators, and anyone interested in the Bible have been waiting for, a clear and compelling account of the central challenges we face when attempting to reconstruct the life and message of Jesus.

Really worth your time, totally fascinating. I’d love to read something in this vein of historical critical research about Islam if anyone has suggestions.

Very engaging
Revisado: 11-28-18
Once we got past the repetition of the first cancer patient’s anonymized ID number (cringed every time they repeated it), the rest of the story, with both historical and current context, flowed in a very “who done it” mystery murder sort of way. So, with the suspense injected, mild levels of adrenalin helped me keep focus through the bio-babble that would normally wear me out (textbook level detail, wrapped in meaningful, story building context= muy bueno). My Mom just had her official ovarian cancer recurrence appointment that I was there for and I wanted a juicy download on immunotherapy. It armed me with the vocab for the follow up visit and some genetic tests that hadn’t been ordered on her surgically removed tumors have now been ordered. An underlying theme of the book is what a cluster F mess it is for patients trying to navigate the medical institutions bias against anything that isn’t burn, bake or cut (was that the sequence), which I/ we are facing. The arrogance of this oncologist is unnerving. Anywho, I recommend this for those needing a really effective primer about Cancer overall and immunotherapy in its current RE-emergent state (version 5.0). I was raised Mormon so the end of it struck a chord and a very sweet note to top sweeten up the close of lots of case study drama. Nice way to shake it up. Bravo team!!!
