Historia
Winston Churchill remains one of the most revered figures of the twentieth century, his name a byword for courageous leadership. But the Churchill we know today is a mixture of history and myth, authored by the man himself. In Mirrors of Greatness, prizewinning historian David Reynolds reevaluates Churchill’s life by viewing it through the eyes of his allies and adversaries, even his own family, revealing Churchill’s lifelong struggle to overcome his political failures and his evolving grasp of what “greatness” truly entailed.

I have read a lot of books about Churchill and frankly was skeptical that I would learn anything new with this book. I was delightfully wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the writer showed how various people influenced Churchill’s thinking. Very well written. I thought the narrator did a fine job.

This is DC Smith's third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk's aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn't long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Interesting way to cover a very broad subject
Revisado: 10-28-24
Picked this off a bookshelf on a recent cruise and knew it was too big for me to read on the ship but decided to start it and then download the Audiobook version if I liked it. Loved it so much I downloaded it to start listening on the trip home. Excellent way to learn about all these geniuses who don’t have the public relations savvy of Elon Musk. Have already recommended it to several friends and family members.

Historia
1217 charts the nascent sense of national identity that began to swell. Three key battles would determine England’s destiny. The fortress of Dover was besieged, the city of Lincoln was attacked, and a great invasion force set sail and, unusually for the time, was intercepted at sea. Catherine Hanley expertly navigates medieval siege warfare, royal politics, and fighting at sea to bring this remarkable period of English history to life.

Excellent background for events around the time of Magna Carta
Revisado: 06-16-24
Not much on the actual Magna Carta but there are plenty of books on that. This is excellent for an overview of the historical events and battles leading up to and subsequent to its signing and renunciation.

I believe that everyone benefits from knowing the history and background of important aspects of their world. Most people simply aren’t that curious. This book won’t change your life but it may cause you to stop and think. That can’t hurt and will probably work to your advantage.

Historia
The twelfth and thirteenth centuries were a time of personal monarchy, when the close friendship or petty feuding between kings and queens could determine the course of history. The Capetians of France and the Angevins of England waged war, made peace, and intermarried. In this lively history, Catherine Hanley traces the great clashes, and occasional friendships, of the two dynasties. Along the way, she emphasizes the fascinating and influential women of the houses—including Eleanor of Aquitaine—and shows how personalities and familial bonds shaped the fate of two countries.

Good book worth the time
Revisado: 12-07-22
Americans find the subject of English and European royalty interesting (without having an interest in adopting the form of government). It's the common ancestry I suppose. Most of us lose interest in anything before Henry VIII, and we start getting cross-eyed at the hundreds of years of people with the same names seemingly fighting the same wars and battles. This author does an excellent job of covering those years by telling the most interesting stories of lots of them without betting bogged down. The narrator does a job at delivering those stories to the listener. All in all, I enjoyed the book and found it well worth my time.

Historia
Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

Not everyone is a fan of Bill Bryson but I can’t help but wonder how many more people would appreciate his work if they heard him read the book. I can’t imagine anyone else being able to capture the subtle nuances that make these audiobooks so enjoyable.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Reads like a suspense novel
Revisado: 05-17-21
Could not stop listening even though it reads like a suspense novel where I know the “ending” but none of the characters or the plot lines. How do you pull that off? Beats me, but Lewis does.
