Historia
Two fugitives, a man and a child, drive all night across a stony desert. As dawn breaks, they roll into an abandoned mine site. From the vehicle they survey a forsaken place - middens of twisted iron, rusty wire, piles of sun-baked trash. They're exhausted, traumatised, desperate now. But as a refuge, this is the most promising place they've seen. The child peers at the field of desolation. The man thinks to himself, this could work. Problem is, they're not alone.

I'm a big fan of Tim Winton and I kept waiting for the magic to kick in, for there to be some point, but it didn't happen.
Great dystopian vision but light on explanation. Lots of loose ends. Plenty of thrills and spills but, ultimately, unsatisfying.
And, as for the end... Seriously?

So brilliant to be back in Sean Duffy world, being read to by the seamless Gerard Doyle, but what possessed you to only write this novella?! Your publisher?!
Gonna have to go back to Book 1 now and start all over again.
Thank you.

Brilliant conceit and Percival Everett really pulls it off. Excellent narration from Dominic Hoffman. It'll make an incredible film, with the Mississippi River in a starring role.

Historia
Alan Hollinghurst, the Booker Prize-winning author of The Line of Beauty, brings us a dark, luminous and wickedly funny portrait of modern England through the lens of one man’s acutely observed and often unnerving experience. It is a story of race and class, theatre and sexuality, love and the cruel shock of violence, from one of the finest writers of our age.

Still recovering from the ending
Revisado: 02-14-25
My favourite so far this year. Alan Hollinghurst is so good and the read by Prasanna Puwanarajah was faultless. Effortless shifting between eras. The party scene where they're dancing to Tales of Brave Ulysses by Cream is one of the best 'music scenes' I've read - they're usually eggy and clunky.

Historia
May 2021. London. Campbell Flynn - art historian and celebrity intellectual - is entering the empire of middle age. Fuelled by an appetite for admiration and the finer things, controversy and novelty, he doesn't take people half as seriously as they take themselves. Which will prove the first of his huge mistakes. The second? Milo Manghasa, his beguiling and provocative student. Milo inhabits a more precarious world, has experiences and ideas which excite his teacher. He also has a plan. Over the course of an incendiary year, a web of crimes and secrets and scandals will be revealed.

Worth the trip down this long and winding road.
Revisado: 10-29-24
Look, I almost gave up on this book - it seemed to be all character exposition and no action - but I went back to it and was glad I did. A complex interweaving of plots exposing modern life and its vanities. Trollope-esque. Worth the trip.
Good narration. SO many accents! But, as usual, an epic fail with the Australian accent. Just don't bother, guys. Do cockney if you must.

Historia
Marnie is stuck. Stuck working alone in her London flat, stuck battling the long afternoons and a life that increasingly feels like it's passing her by. Michael is coming undone. Reeling from his wife's departure, increasingly reclusive, taking himself on long, solitary walks across the moors and fells. When a persistent mutual friend and some very English weather conspire to bring them together, Marnie and Michael suddenly find themselves alone on the most epic of walks and on the precipice of a new friendship. But can it survive the journey?

Historia
Cinnamon Gardens Nursing Home is nestled in the quiet suburb of Westgrove, Sydney – populated with residents with colourful histories, each with their own secrets, triumphs and failings. This is their safe place, an oasis of familiar delights – a beautiful garden, a busy kitchen and a bountiful recreation schedule. But this ordinary neighbourhood is not without its prejudices. The serenity of Cinnamon Gardens is threatened by malignant forces more interested in what makes this refuge different rather than embracing the calm companionship that makes this place home to so many.

Modern fiction with heart and mind.
Revisado: 10-29-24
The title suggests a cosy afternoon in a cafe. This story is so not that. It is a wonderful modern story with roots deep in the past. I learned so much about bloody times in Sri Lanka, the Tamil Tigers and how racism is still alive and well in parts of suburban Sydney. Not for the faint-hearted but a must for lovers of fiction with heart and mind.
Flawless narration from Rachel Tidd.

Historia
Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common. Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties - successful, competent and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father's death, he's medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother.

Historia
Eilis Lacey is Irish, married to Tony Fiorello, a plumber and one of four Italian American brothers, all of whom live in neighbouring houses on a cul-de-sac in Lindenhurst, Long Island, with their wives and children and Tony's parents. One day, an Irishman comes to the door asking for Eilis by name. He tells her that his wife is pregnant with Tony's child and that when the baby is born, he will not raise it but will leave it with her. Eilis has choices to make, and what she does in the wake of this shattering news is at the heart of one of Tóibín's most riveting and emotional novels to date.

I loved everything about this book. Brilliant, faultless narration from Jessie Buckley - 10 stars!
I went back to watch 'Brooklyn' for a bit of back-story but I didn't need to - the book stands alone.
The ending was a killer ... because it wasn't an ending. I expect Book 3 from Mr Tóibím!
