Fry's most recent recollection of "the Classics" is another perfect tale of treachery, action, adventure, humour, ... Anything and everything really.

Listening to Stephen Fry tell these tales is exactly what it must have felt like sitting around a fire, not having television or anything, and listening to the town elder telling tall tales and stories. Absolutely mesmerizing.

After having listened to this book, I immediately started recommending it to several people. There is mention in the book of neuroplasticity and to a certain extent, this is what you're doing when you are experiencing this book: you're rewiring some of those old "hard truths" you held fast. More relevant now than ever, we as a species have no reasons to congratulate ourselves: we have still a very long way to go as a society to right the wrongs of inequality.

Granted, Frederick Davidson's narration takes some getting used to. But believe me, you'll appreciate his flow soon enough. And once you do, you'll find that he has the perfect style for this amazing masterpiece of a retelling of Europe's tumultuous history. Absolutely recommended for anyone with even a slight interest in the Middle Ages.

I kept thinking: "It's not Mythos"

"Mythos" (and "Heroes") by Stephen Fry bares a lot of resemblance to this. Both have been written by fantastic British authors, both are a re-imagining of stories of mythology filtered through the eyes of these wonderful writers.

Unfortunately while Stephen Fry's books were absolutely amazing, filled with dry wit and fantastic Fry-esque quips and footnotes, I failed to really find Gaiman in the stories he was telling. He's telling great stories, but that's all he seems to be doing: telling them. And while a classic tale needs no flourishes, I found that they do add to the story.

Having finally read this book while being absolutely immersed in all manner of WWI books and documentaries during the Covid-19 pandemic, I have to say of everything I've read and watched, this stuck with me the most. This felt like being a fly on the walls of the trenches.

It must have been hard to follow up something like "All Quiet on the Western Front", but Remarque pulls it off perfectly. This story is rife with heartbreak, depression, loss, aimlessness, ... It's humanity run adrift. A real emotional rollercoaster.

Too short to really go somewhere and still manages to be uninteresting. There are some things here that might be good ideas in a bigger story but they would also need to be fleshed out by an author with more skill. I did not like Livingston's style of writing unfortunately.

I'm not a historian. But I do enjoy history. Be it in a museum, on a page or out in the real world. And undoubtedly one of the most influential historical events for us Belgians was The Great War. And there is no better way to grasp this delicate matter than with this book. Written not for historians, but for people that enjoy history. It's long, but it's worth it. Chapters interspersed with important background information make this a clear and excellent way to navigate through the history of this terrible war. Absolutely recommended.

The thing that I loved most about Metro 2033, apart from Rupert Degas' always excellent narration, is that it infuses a post-apocalyptic fiction storyline with so much that makes us humans. Feelings, thoughts, politics, philosophy, religion, relations, strangers and friends. It's what makes this book absolutely believable and a mirror to a world that could have been. Or could still become. Excellent.

I can not begin to tell you how much I loved this audiobook. Being a big fan of what Monty Don does as a gardener, I was not sure that a book about his dogs would appeal to me that much. Boy, was I wrong. This is written in such a way that it combines his love for animals (dogs, especially) and his love for gardening in such a natural, autobiographical way that it feels like a journey Monty is allowing you to follow him on. And what an adventure. I laughed and I literally cried. I adored this book. And Monty Don's voice as a narrator brings to mind that other fantastic British author, Stephen Fry. In cadence as well as softness of speech. And that is all the recommendation you should need to check this book out for yourself.
