Historia
A journalist writing in the first flush of revolutionary enthusiasm, John Reed gives a gripping record of the events in Petrograd in November 1917, when Lenin and the Bolsheviks finally seized power. Containing verbatim reports both of speeches by leaders and the chance comments of bystanders, set against an idealized backcloth of the proletariat, soldiers, sailors, and peasants uniting to throw off oppression, Reed's account is the product of passionate involvement and remains a classic of reporting.

The Road, to Dictatorship
Revisado: 03-08-25
This book relates a granular telling, of the Bolsheviks - from their origins, as the party, of the sympathetic underdogs, to foreshadowing the reign, of terror, of Stalin, to come. A must-read, cautionary tale, for all capitalists, and readers, interested, in history.

Interviewing scores of line workers, union leaders, hog farmers, and local politicians and activists, Genoways reveals an industry pushed to its breaking point. This book is powerful journalism, on a topic that few people care, to learn about. Read this, as a companion work, to Eating Animals, by Jonathan Foer.

Historia
The Russian Revolution had a decisive impact on the history of the 20th century. In the years following the collapse of the Soviet regime and the opening of its archives, it has become possible to step back and see the full picture. Starting with an overview of the roots of the revolution, Fitzpatrick takes the story from 1917, through Stalin's "revolution from above", to the great purges of the 1930s.

Capitalists should read this, as a cautionary tale. It is, also, important, for anyone, who is interested, in history, in general.

Historia
The Good Soldier Švejk, written shortly after the First World War, is one of the great antiwar satires - and one of the funniest books of the 20th (or any) century. In creating his eponymous hero, Jaroslav Hašek produced an unforgettable character who charms and infuriates and bamboozles his way through the conflagration that tore through the heart of Europe, upending empires and changing social history. It is the closing period of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The assassination at Sarajevo has just occurred and armies are on the march.

Way Better, Than Catch-22
Revisado: 02-16-25
Svejk is no idiot; he is a genius. Although, this book may be hard, on a gentle, modern reader's ears, it is an important look, back, at WWI, from yesterday's U.S. - the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a melting pot, of vast proportions, for that time.

Historia
“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

Tough Read, but Important
Revisado: 01-25-25
The rating reflects the reader's sheer enjoyment, only. Elliot Page's journey, is powerful, but naturally, very painful, at times. Definitely, still, read this book.

Historia
Why has there been such an explosion of discussion about sex in the West since the 17th century? Here, one of France's greatest intellectuals explores the evolving social, economic, and political forces that have shaped our attitudes toward sex. In a book that is at once controversial and seductive, Michel Foucault describes how we are in the process of making a science of sex which is devoted to the analysis of desire, rather than the increase of pleasure.

Historia
The best-known prose work by the winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Literature examines the moral and intellectual conflicts faced by men and women living under totalitarianism of the left or right. Written in the early 1950s, when Eastern Europe was in the grip of Stalinism and many Western intellectuals placed their hopes in the new order of the East, this classic work reveals in fascinating detail the often beguiling allure of totalitarian rule to people of all political beliefs and its frightening effects on the minds of those who embrace it.

Revisado: 12-21-24

I, personally, didn't enjoy most, of this book because of how cynical, and pessimistic, it was. However, I do, highly, respect the book, and its author. I can, easily, see this book being turned, into an awesome, math documentary, on PBS.
