Historia
Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard’s band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all.

Beautiful!
Revisado: 03-13-13
Beautiful story. Beautifully read. One of the best narrations I've listened to. He sets the various moods convincingly, the story line moves with appropriate balance and emphasis, and the characters each have their own quality. Extremely pleasant to reconnect with the book in this way. I was going to read this to my granddaughter, and I'm a pretty good reader, but Inglis did such a fantastic job that I am now thinking that we will share listening to this audible together.

Historia
Emma Bovary is the original desperate housewife. Beautiful but bored, she is married to the provincial doctor Charles Bovary yet harbors dreams of an elegant and passionate life. Escaping into sentimental novels, she finds her fantasies dashed by the tedium of her days. Motherhood proves to be a burden; religion is only a brief distraction. In an effort to make her life everything she believes it should be, she spends lavishly on clothes and on her home and embarks on two disappointing affairs.

Beautifully Narrated Classic
Revisado: 02-13-13
Well, revisiting this novel was more enjoyable than I expected. I remembered it being very depressing and difficult to get through when I was a good deal younger and less tolerant. I am so glad that I was encouraged to get the audible. It really brought the characters alive for me and elicited greater understanding of Flaubert's masterpiece. Although Emma is a very frustrating character, I found her character to be extremely well crafted. Never dull, always held my attention. An audible that I believe would engage many listeners, as a new experience or as a reawakening to this classic. Thanks for this winner!

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Didn't Like Characters nor Storyline
Revisado: 01-27-13
I found this selection difficult to follow and uncomfortably jumpy in time and space. Narration was good. I just didn't care about the characters and the Hollywood dialogue was, to me, rather boring and repetitive. I tried to reread sections, as since I knew my mind was wandering I assumed I had just missed too much, but the re-listening was not satisfactory. After listening to about 3/4 of the novel, I decided there were too many other audibles that I was eager to listen to so I deleted this from my iTunes.

Absolutely lovely!
Revisado: 01-02-13
This is a favorite! I just finished it and was motivated to immediately rate and write a review to encourage others to enjoy the experience. It is a beautiful book. It is engrossing. It is not predictable. Even the technical discussions are neither boring nor beyond comprehension. I gave it one less star for the performance, because like another reviewer, I believe it should have been read by an Englishman. Not that the accents are disturbing, it is just that I can tell the difference in regions, and would rather hear the true dialects. Also the reader has a speech pattern that is carried onto several of the characters, most specifically the women's voices. That said, don't let my criticism of this aspect stop you from experiencing this lovely story! Brought me close to tears at the end. Not that it was sad. It is just a lovely read.

Very Enjoyable History
Revisado: 12-31-12
So interesting reading what Jack Kennedy really thought about the people surrounding him. It clarified so much of what actions were taken during the administration and the difficulties of any president. Very rare behind the scenes look at one administration.

Historia
> The Chaperone is a captivating novel about the woman who chaperoned an irreverent Louise Brooks to New York City in 1922, and the summer that would change them both. Only a few years before becoming a famous actress and an icon for her generation, a 15-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita to make it big in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle is a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip.

More Than Expected! Loved it!
Revisado: 11-17-12
I liked the way the author built this novel. The unexpected disclosures. Many occasions to ponder over. Much encouragement to evaluate one's own, as well as past, social mores. Where do each of us fit in? Tolerance, acceptance, patience, judgements are all studied in this engaging novel. Performance is excellent.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

There was so much to discover and to thinking about in this novel. I listened for hours at a time. I cried and I laughed and I pondered. There are so many levels, and all engaging. Masterly written and masterly read. Don't miss this one. Just like Owen Meany, it's special!

Loved it!
Revisado: 11-11-11
Spent a few very late nights because I just couldn't put this one down. Beautifully read -- which makes so much difference to being able to relax and enjoy a book such as this with many characters coming in and out of the scenes. I could never enjoy this as a movie. Too much to capture of character and mood.
