Historia
No company embodied American ingenuity, innovation, and industrial power more spectacularly and more consistently than the General Electric Company. GE once developed and manufactured many of the inventions we take for granted today, nearly everything from the lightbulb to the jet engine. GE also built a cult of financial and leadership success envied across the globe and became the world’s most valuable and most admired company. But even at the height of its prestige and influence, cracks were forming in its formidable foundation.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Long and interconnected rut in American history
Revisado: 01-13-24
An important book tying together lost threads on the ‘wrong’ side of the American fabric. A lot of detailed historical information; kept from its true greatness by the need for better organization and determined editing.

Nothing is more inspiring than a big vision that becomes a triumphant, new reality. Think of how the Empire State Building went from a sketch to the jewel of New York's skyline in twenty-one months, or how Apple’s iPod went from a project with a single employee to a product launch in eleven months.

Affirmation
Revisado: 07-04-23
Read most of this book on the 4th of July, after having put it off for quite a while. So glad I did. With all of our social problems and continuous “renewables will save everything” rhetoric, I needed an affirmation of reality. The facts are still the facts. How reassuring.

Seems like a pretty charmed life for such a junior officer.
Giving the full names and nicknames of everyone becomes quite boring, quite quickly.
The Korean war experiences were perhaps the most interesting and enlightening.

Europe has fallen. Pearl Harbor is in flames. Enter: the Eighth. In 1941 the RAF fought a desperate battle of survival against the Luftwaffe over Britain. Then, from across the Atlantic, came a new generation of American pilots, gunners, and bombardiers, a new generation of flying machines called the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator, the P-47 Thunderbolt, and the P-51 Mustang fighter.

Bless Them All
Revisado: 05-15-23
Great book, faithful to the individuals and to the crews they formed. Questionable tactics and strategies but on they flew. Got a real appreciation for flying through the flack. The concluding chapter was one heck of a great summary.

While the book provides a lot of information it does it in a confused manner. Not helped by an over use of acronyms. Great potential for truth bringing, failing due to need for an organizing editor.

Historia
When Admiral William Halsey selected Destroyer Squadron 21 to lead his victorious ships into Tokyo Bay to accept the Japanese surrender, it was the most battle-hardened US naval squadron of the war. But it was not the squadron of ships that had accumulated such an inspiring résumé; it was the people serving aboard them. Through diaries, personal interviews with survivors, and letters written to and by the crews during the war, preeminent historian of the Pacific theater John Wukovits brings to life the human story of the squadron and its men.

A Grand Salute to the Fletcher Class Destroyer
Revisado: 04-26-18
This is the best capture of the Tin Can story I have read. Much more than simply naval cavalry, Fletcher class cans were the most flexible and combative of the breed. The design of the Fletcher class in particular made all the difference: lethal, fast and focused. Short on space for luxury but it fought like a dog on a bone. Over twenty years later they could still touch 30 knots and run all day. They changed everything.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Historia
When it first appeared, A Rumor of War brought home to American readers, with terrifying vividness and honesty, the devastating effects of the Vietnam War on the soldiers who fought there. And while it is a memoir of one young man's experiences and therefore deeply personal, it is also a book that speaks powerfully to today's students about the larger themes of human conscience, good and evil, and the desperate extremes men are forced to confront in any war.

Confronting A New Reality
Revisado: 10-02-17
Brought home the reality that this war wasn't going to be like the others. You just volunteered for thirteen months in hell with no clear objectives and no blood payed position worth holding.
A solid book, well worth reading. Even though this lesson is well known now, it doesn't seem to have generalized to all of our following wars. That points out the difference between knowing and learning; which is yet to be accomplished.
