Historia
Gwyneth Blacksman was content to live comfortably on her farm, but a long-held secret changed her life forever. Thrust into a role she didn't want or ask for, Gwen must face the facts. Will she step up and be who her people need her to be? Or will she wilt under the pressure of politics, schemes, and a looming war? The emperor of Devin offers her a way to avoid the bloodshed that is sure to come, but his offer is disingenuous at best, a lie at worst.

An intriguing listen with great characters!
Revisado: 02-27-20
The politics and world-building in this book were rich and detailed, and Gwyneth was a great character to root for as she tried to find her identity as a farm girl turned queen. The dual timeline could get a little confusing at times, but also drew some interesting parallels between different times in Gwyneth's life.
The narrator did well differentiating between characters (though a few of the voices were a little harder to listen to) and brought the story to life in an engaging way.
Overall, a very enjoyable listen!

Even better than Book One!
Revisado: 06-19-19
I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I think I liked Fallow even better! I liked seeing how Kit and Bryce have matured and grown during their time apart and found places in their new communities. The uncertainty surrounding their relationship was easy to sympathize with, and I was intrigued by the additional tension introduced by Regyn. It seems I'm a sucker for a good love triangle :) Plus the quickened magi were a fascinating group to get to know. Things got really intense at the end, and I can't wait to see how it all plays out in the next book!
The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life. Her voice was pleasant, and I liked how she differentiated between characters. I got a lot done in the midst of this book so I had an excuse to keep listening!

Fun, humor, life lessons, and all the feels!
Revisado: 05-05-19
This book was a delightful combination of fun, humor, life lessons, and all the feels. I loved the vivid descriptions of the Electrical Menagerie and other acts, which felt a bit reminiscent of The Night Circus. Carthage and Huxley were such interesting characters to get to know as more and more was revealed about their pasts and family dynamics. And as a pair, they had so many humorous interactions due to their opposing personalities and touching moments of increased understanding. The puzzle of the mysterious "accidental" deaths surrounding the competition really kept me intrigued, and I couldn't get enough of the cool world-building, especially the electricals (yay Dominic!) and the awesome trains that ran on invisible rails between floating islands.
The narrator absolutely brings the story to life with tons of personality and distinctive voices for each character. I think Carthage's accent was my favorite :) His engaging portrayal kept me on the edge of my seat - sometimes nervous, sometimes laughing, occasionally tearing up... For you audiobook fans out there, this one should definitely go on your list!
I would highly recommend The Electrical Menagerie for anyone who would enjoy a fun, big top-centered adventure with dynamic characters and a new world to explore.

Well-written and well-performed!
Revisado: 01-09-19
I had seen this book likened to The Labyrinth, but otherwise I went in with very few expectations of where it would go. I'll admit at first it seemed like a girl's random adventures in Faerie, but I'm so glad I kept going because it turned into so much more! Every encounter that appeared random at first came full circle later in the story, and the world of Faerie became increasingly fun to explore. The writing was beautiful, and while I at first found the transitions between the real world and dream world a bit confusing, the narrative worked really well if I was just willing to stop thinking so hard and go with it. :) My absolute favorite part of the book was the rapport between Claire and the Faerie King - their interactions were so charged with emotion and fun to interpret, and their relationship became so much more profound than I anticipated. The ending completely satisfied my reader's heart, plus made me want to read it all over again to put all the connections together better in my mind (and to relive some favorite moments!).
If you enjoy a mingling of dreams and reality and exploring a unique vision of the Faerie world, I would highly recommend The Lord of Dreams! I also highly recommend the audiobook - the narrator had a wonderfully soothing voice and did a great job bringing the characters to life with different voices and accents.

A fun, quick read! Or listen :)
Revisado: 09-09-18
This was a fun, quick read (or listen, in my case)! I felt like the level of satire varied a bit during the course of the story, which made it unclear whether it was meant to be pure amusement or have an underlying message. But it was well-written, funny, and unpredictable, plus the ending was perfect :) The narrator represented Kelley's voice well and was a great match for the genre.

Revisado: 09-09-18
Nyssa Glass was my introduction to the steampunk genre, and I definitely intend to read more! Fun characters, sweet romance, witty dialogue, intrigue, and adventure all made this series very enjoyable to read - or in my case, listen to on audiobook :) Highly recommended for steampunk fans or anyone wanting to give the genre a try! The narration was well done - I enjoyed the pacing and all the characters' voices. And I loved listening to the whole thing without waiting for the next book!

Revisado: 04-23-18
This definitely wasn't my typical kind of book, but I ended up really enjoying it! Bobby was an easy character to relate to, and I liked that he gained a new community over the course of the book and grew to be more courageous. The changes in perspective were all timed well to build suspense, and it was so fascinating to see the mysteries unravel surrounding Bobby's roommate, his premonitions, and the Servant. Any readers who like suspense with some paranormal elements should definitely check out this series!

So intense!
Revisado: 04-23-18
This was intense! I found this book more emotional than Servant, as Bobby first faced the return of the mother who abandoned him, then the horrors of an institution thriving on child abuse. But the writing style still had the same honesty and humor that I appreciated in the first book. I enjoyed getting to know the community of former servants better, and Thane made for a fascinating adversary. And I like the direction things seem to be heading for Bobby and Carly... :)

Fun characters and great world-building
Revisado: 11-05-17
I'm continuing to enjoy this series, but I have to admit Dragon's Rival didn't hold quite the same charm for me as the first two books. I think it's because one of my favorite aspects of The Dragon and the Scholar saga has been the interactions between Shannon and Ewan, and this book had far less due to the physical and emotional distance between them. But it still had the fun characters and great world-building that I associate with Burke's books, and an interesting mystery to solve. I felt like the ending was a little rushed, but it was otherwise very satisfying :) I'm looking forward to seeing how the author closes out the series!
As for the audio aspect, the narrator did well differentiating between the many characters voices and even including accents. I listened to the whole thing in three days!

This series just keeps getting better!
Revisado: 08-18-17
I couldn't wait to get a hold of Omission, and it didn't disappoint! I love how Darby's power and her relationship with Mark get more complex in every book. The mystery of the bizarre murder case and the strange pull of the new man in Darby's life kept me on the edge of my seat, and of course most of all I couldn't wait to see what would happen with Darby and Mark :) The narration was really well done, and I was seriously so drawn in that it became problematic because I had trouble taking out my headphones and returning to real life. While the ending of this book was very satisfying, I already can't wait for the next one!
