Historia
In 1461, Nicholas is in Florence. Backed by none other than Cosimo de' Medici, he will sail the Black Sea to Trebizond, last outpost of Byzantium, and the last jewel missing from the crown of the Ottoman Empire. But trouble lies ahead. Nicholas's stepdaughter—at the tender age of thirteen—has eloped with his rival in trade: a Machiavellian Genoese who races ahead of Nicholas, sowing disaster at every port. And time is of the essence: Trebizond may fall to the Turks at any moment.

Historia
Niccolò Rising, book one of the series, finds us in Bruges, 1460. Jousting is the genteel pastime, and successful merchants are, of necessity, polyglot. Street smart, brilliant at figures, adept at the subtleties of diplomacy and the well-timed untruth, Dunnett's hero rises from wastrel to prodigy in a breathless adventure that wins him the hand of the strongest woman in Bruges and the hatred of two powerful enemies.

Stunning historical novel and narration
Revisado: 03-25-25
A captivating view of the late 1400s—inhabited by a mix of mostly real and some crucial fictional characters The narration is exceptional also.
I like the Niccolo series much better than the Lymond chronicles. Niccolo comes first chronologically but was written after Lymond. Dunnett’s detailed narrative reflects a more mature writer.

Historia
It’s 1914, and World War I is ceaselessly churning through thousands of young men on both sides of the fight. The violence of the front feels far away to Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood and the rest of their classmates, safely ensconced in their idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. News of the heroic deaths of their friends only makes the war more exciting. Gaunt, half German, is busy fighting his own private battle—an all-consuming infatuation with his best friend, the glamorous, charming Ellwood—without a clue that Ellwood is pining for him in return

Beautifully written and narrated, this book brings home the vast tragedy of WWI and the millions of personal tragedies it engendered. A love story between two officers—at a time when being gay was illegal—forms its core.

Historia
Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was a nineteen-year-old kid with a dream of escaping his family's cramped flat on Faithful Place and running away to London with his girl, Rosie Daly. But on the night they were supposed to leave, Rosie didn't show. Frank took it for granted that she'd dumped him-probably because of his alcoholic father, nutcase mother, and generally dysfunctional family. He never went home again. Neither did Rosie. Then, twenty-two years later, Rosie's suitcase shows up.

Historia
As the solitary child of mild and gentle parents, Jane is fascinated and astounded by her exotically European aunt, Dolly. Dolly’s ways are certainly not her parents’ ways, yet she is an object of interest and dread to her beleaguered relatives. It is clear that they have nothing in common: Jane feels no affection for Dolly, and Dolly clearly dislikes children. Yet the two are fated to go through life in uneasy harness, until such time as their alliance is accepted by both as not only inevitable, but as something of great value. Read by Fiona Shaw.

The narrator makes it work
Revisado: 12-24-23
If you can accept the central absurdity of cobbling together an
extinct Plesiosaur from bits and pieces of modern-day animals. , this book is an entertaining listen .
.A bit too long, a few too many repetitions of outraged womanhood, but likable nevertheless.
CE McGill is quite young (23 yo) and shows great potential.
The narrator is terrific!

Historia
A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, cutting off the town of Thorndike and leaving a sizable farm abandoned. The disaster presents an opportunity for Birnam Wood, an undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic guerrilla gardening collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. For years, the group has struggled to break even. To occupy the farm at Thorndike would mean a shot at solvency at last. But the enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine also has an interest in the place.

Excellent reader for implausible but (mostly) engaging story
Revisado: 06-08-23
I loved Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries. This one falls far short but the reader kept me engaged. Abrupt changes in sentiments of the main characters (from caring to callous to absurdly naive and back again) and the ending were the weakest parts for me.
