Historia
After two years and seven months biding her time on Anima, her home ark, it is finally time to act, to put what she has discovered in the Book of Faruk to use. Under an assumed identity, Ophelia travels to Babel, a cosmopolitan and thoroughly modern ark that is the jewel of the universe. Will her talent as a reader suffice to avoid being lured into a deadly trap by her ever more fearful adversaries? Will she ever see Thorn, her betrothed, again?

Excellent narration, well drawn characters, byzantine, fascinating plot, a dark mystery. This series drew me in. I don't want it to end!

Comforting fluff

A sweet fantasy and romance that doesn't go sexual. Unfortunately the narrator's voice for the male protagonist was not at all good. Other male voices were better.

Historia
In 1963, in a Siberian prison, former nuclear specialist Valery Kolkhanov has mastered what it takes to survive: the right connections to the guards for access to food and cigarettes, the right pair of warm boots, and the right attitude toward the small pleasures of life so he won’t go insane. But one day, all that changes: Valery’s university mentor steps in and sweeps him from the frozen camp to a mysterious unnamed city. It houses a set of nuclear reactors, and surrounding it is a forest so damaged it looks like the trees have rusted from within.

A wonderful storyteller
Revisado: 09-10-22
I love her writing. She's able to describe extremely difficult issues without making one recoil in horror. This is the first of her books I know of that does not involve fantasy. The characters are well drawn and interesting. and she clearly does her research on both technical and cultural issues. Her observations on culture at the end are pointed, and sadly accurate. The narrator was excellent, no stumbles. Highly recommended.

Drug Use for Grown-Ups

Historia
In Drug Use for Grown-Ups, he draws on decades of research and his own personal experience to argue definitively that the criminalization and demonization of drug use - not drugs themselves - have been a tremendous scourge on America, not least in reinforcing this country's enduring structural racism. Dr. Hart did not always have this view. He came of age in one of Miami's most troubled neighborhoods at a time when many ills were being laid at the door of crack cocaine. His initial work as a researcher was aimed at proving that drug use caused bad outcomes.

Every politician should read this book
Revisado: 10-28-21
It was good to hear the author's voice. He did not narrate his previous book. I hope that his admission of drug use doesn't make readers shy away from the strong evidence he presents that drugs are not harmful to stable adults and that only a minority develop addiction. Our culture can be very moralistic. It's ironic the the same people who complain about government controlling our lives are silent on this subject. As a psychiatrist with 20 years experience working with seriously mentally individuals, going to their homes, meeting their families and friends, or seeing them on the street, I have certainly seen what appear to be positive effects of recreational drugs. I was puzzled given the education I received and research I saw that highlighted the harms. I would love to know why cocaine seems to help some people with schizophrenia, but I rather doubt that any researcher would touch that one. The racist underpinnings of drug policy detailed here are appalling and shameful. Drugs should be legalized if only to help the Black community, and other underprivileged communities, recover from injustice.

Historia
A pioneering neuroscientist shares his story of growing up in one of Miami's toughest neighborhoods and how it led him to his groundbreaking work in drug addiction. As a youth, Carl Hart didn't realize the value of school; he studied just enough to stay on the basketball team. At the same time, he was immersed in street life. Today he is a cutting-edge neuroscientist - Columbia University's first tenured African American professor in the sciences.

The President and Congress need to read this book
Revisado: 10-20-21
In the past I have believed the assertions of media, government, and scientists that illegal drugs have overwhelmingly harmful effects. But now, as a psychiatrist with 35 years of experience, I know from my experience that this is just not true. As Dr Hart says, most drug users are casual users who are by no means addicted. I do home visits with the seriously mentally ill, most of whom use illegal drugs, and I am appalled and ashamed by the cruelly destructive effect of US drug policy on the Black community, the racist origins of which Dr Hart delineates. It was good to hear the results of careful research on illegal drugs, but the results felt more powerful combined with his personal story. It is sad that it took serious good luck for someone of his background to become the accomplished scientist he is today. It makes you wonder about the contributions that other disadvantaged persons might have made to society if given the chance. Good narrator, with few glitches.

Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

Food for thought
Revisado: 03-19-21
Not so much a book about fungi as the questions that fungi raise for science and even philosophy, with portraits of the characters who have pursued their study. The author has a measured and calming voice, allowing time for reflection. He's a wonderful writer, and yes, there are slow spots and meandering paths. I learned much and reflected more. This is a book worthy of being read again, and even again, by an outside the box thinker.
