The never-before-seen correspondence of John le Carré, one of the most important novelists of our generation, is collected in this beautiful volume. During his lifetime, le Carré wrote numerous letters to writers, spies, politicians, artists, actors and public figures. This collection is a treasure trove, revealing the late author's humor, generosity, and wit—a side of him many listeners have not previously seen.

Life story from a master storyteller.
Revisado: 03-18-25
I have never cared for John le Carre’s spy novels, but I found this collection of his letters irresistible. His warm friendships and intelligent commentary on world affairs accompany the story of his life and work, all presented by a virtuous wordsmith.

A very technical look at English literature.

The performance makes the book almost impossible to enjoy. He tries to make the performance dramatic by dropping his voice on the punch line and obscuring the meaning of the sentence.

Historia
Celebrated stage actress Mona Zahid wakes up on Thanksgiving morning to the clamor of guests packed into her Manhattan apartment and to a wave of dread: her in-laws are lurking on the other side of the bedroom door; she’s still fighting with her husband; and in just a few weeks she will begin rehearsals as Shakespeare’s Cleopatra, the hardest role in theater. In an impulsive burst, Mona bounds out the door with the family dog in tow (“I forgot the parsley!” is her lame excuse) to find her estranged mentor, Milton Katz, who was recently forced out of the legendary theater company he founded.

Dark, zany, imaginative humor and fascinating characters. Rates a second or third reading. Knowledge and appreciation of Shakespeare essential.

Historia
He was an ambitious but drifting writer from a prominent Scottish family. She was a tough Nevada silver miner’s wife, with children, when they met. Who could have predicted that Fanny Van de Grift and Robert Louis Stevenson would go on to create one of history’s great literary marriages? From their first encounter in France in 1876, Fanny and Louis’s partnership transcended societal expectations to become a literary union that was progressive, eccentric, and tempestuous, but always animated by a profound mutual respect

Interesting book, annoying reader.
Revisado: 12-14-24
This double biography of Robert Lewis Stevenson and his devoted wife reveals their eccentric relationship and highly adventurous life together. Unfortunately, the reader attempts to mimic the accent of the speaker in every quotation, The effect is ridiculous and breaks the flow of the narrative.

Historia
“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late....” These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine - a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise. Odd, considering he didn’t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?

More fun than a picnic
Revisado: 05-28-23
This series (there are 4 of them now, with one on the way) is outstanding entertainment. Anthony Horowitz is a virtuoso writer, in quality and quantity. He's written children's action stories, highly innovative mysteries, parodies of Canon Doyle and Ian Fleming, and Foyle's War for television, all of which are excellent entertainment--but these books featuring a detective name Hawthorne are my favorites. The author has borrowed Doyle's trick of telling the detective's exploits through the eyes of a clueless sidekick, and made himself (Anthony Horowitz} the clueless sidekick--not only clueless but reluctant, offended by the detective's treatment of him and embarrassed about his prejudices. He (Horowitz) tells the reader all sorts of things about his own life--where he lives, how he works, his editor, his other projects--so the reader has another layer of mystery crying out to be solved: how much of this detail is for real? For instance, did he really have a meeting with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson about a sequel to Tintin (in the first book)? Did he really write the play featured in the fourth book (The Twist of a Knife) and were any of those cast members real?
Any of Mr. Horowitz's books merit a second reading; once from audible, and a second in print, so as to enjoy the mastery of language.

Historia
A colorful account of the civilizations that rose and fell on the lands bordering the Mediterranean, The Middle Sea represents the culmination of a great historian’s unparalleled art and scholarship. John Julius Norwich provides brilliant portraits of the Phoenicians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the French, the Venetians, the Popes, and the pirates of the Gulf. Above all, he deftly traces the intermingling of ancient conflicts and modern sensibilities that shapes life today on the shores of the Middle Sea.
