Historia
The story of the American West is the story of a relentless quest for a precious resource: water. It is a tale of rivers diverted and dammed, of political corruptions and intrigue, of billion-dollar battles over water rights, of ecologic and economic disaster. In Cadillac Desert, Marc Reisner writes of the earliest settlers, lured by the promise of paradise, and of the ruthless tactics employed by Los Angeles politicians and business interests to ensure the city's growth. He documents the bitter rivalry between two government giants to transform the West.

A classic, must read book.
Revisado: 03-11-24
This book is about the past, the settlement of the American West and taming of its rivers, but it's really about the future, and the challenges sure to come due to the lifestyle and farming practices we have adopted in some of the driest places on earth.

Historia
After one great battle, the Architects disappeared. Yet humanity’s fragile peace is brief. For, 40 years later, the galaxy’s greatest alien enemy has returned. This time, the artefacts that preserved entire worlds from destruction are ineffective. And no planet is safe. The Human Colony worlds are in turmoil as they face extinction. Some believe alliances with other species can save them. Others insist humanity must fight alone. But no one has the firepower or technology to ensure victory, as the Architects loom ever closer.

A strange and compelling vision of the far future. Some of Tchaikovsky's best work, a step up from the first book. Excited to move straight on to book 3!

Historia
While plenty of entertaining books have been written about the history of alcohol and other intoxicants, none have offered a comprehensive, convincing answer to the basic question of why humans want to get high in the first place. Drunk elegantly cuts through the tangle of urban legends and anecdotal impressions that surround our notions of intoxication to provide the first rigorous, scientifically grounded explanation for our love of alcohol.

A truly fascinating book about a borderline taboo topic, the benefits (as we as the harms) of the human drive for intoxication. Linking science and anthropology with stories and verse it's a great listen and deeply illuminating.

Historia
Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

Awful yet captivating. Utterly enthralling.
Revisado: 09-09-23
This is like nothing I have read or listened to before. It is so brutal yet so lyrical. The prose is mesmerising and beautifully constructed, with terse yet poetic descriptions of the American West, including of the casual and constant violence of life there. Some of that violence, so effectively described, is hard to get out of your mind afterwards however. Nonetheless, or perhaps because of this, it's a brilliant work of literature. The narrator is great.

Historia
Danny North is the first Gate Mage to be born on Earth in nearly 2,000 years, or at least the first to survive and claim his power, for families of Westil in exile on Earth have a treaty that requires the death of any suspected Gate Mage. The wars between the families had been terrible until at last they realized it was their own survival in question. But a Gate Mage, one who could build a Great Gate back to Westil, would give his own family a terrible advantage over all the others and reignite the wars. So it was decided that they all had to die.

This trilogy starts well but totally loses its way
Revisado: 03-18-23
This review would probably be better on the first book than the third, even though - or especially because - I really liked the first book and it's this one I feel very let down by. The magic system is great and the key characters are pretty interesting at the start of the trilogy but the whole thing degenerates into a conservative Christian allegory with half the characters being teenagers written by someone who seemingly hasn't met a teenager in 30 years. It's a mess.

Historia
What happens when artificial intelligence saturates political life and depletes the planet? How is AI shaping our understanding of ourselves and our societies? Drawing on more than a decade of research, award-winning scholar Kate Crawford reveals how AI is a technology of extraction: from the minerals drawn from the earth, to the labor pulled from low-wage information workers, to the data taken from every action and expression. This book reveals how this planetary network is fueling a shift toward undemocratic governance and increased inequity.

This book offers a very different and refreshing angle on AI from others I've read, exploring the environmental and human impacts, and how AI systems are built on very human systems, inevitably taking on their biases and blind spots. Highly recommended for anyone interested in technology.

Historia
Marie Laure lives with her father in Paris within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History where he works as the master of the locks (there are thousands of locks in the museum). When she is six, she goes blind, and her father builds her a model of their neighbourhood, every house, every manhole, so she can memorise it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane. When the Germans occupy Paris, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure's agoraphobic great uncle lives in a tall, narrow house by the sea wall.

Revisado: 11-29-22
This is one of the best books I've listened to. Lyrical, lush, and very moving. A unique story extraordinarily well told, it moves back and forth in time following two young people swept up in a world gone mad, this book grabs hold of your heart and doesn't let go. I've only just finished it and already I miss it. The reader is perfect.

Historia
The Chaos Machine is the story of how the world was driven mad by social media. The election of populists like Trump and Bolsonaro; strife and genocide in countries like Myanmar, the rampant spread of COVID-19 conspiracy theories as deadly as the pandemic itself, all of these are products of a breakdown in our social and political lives, a breakdown driven by the apps, companies and algorithms that compete constantly for our attention.
