Historia
The year is 1815, and an American, Miss Amelia Stonehold, has arrived in the Devon town of Axminster, accompanied by her "cousin" Serena Meleva. She's brought with her a list to tick off: find a property, investigate the neighbors, bargain for and purchase the property, staff the property and . . . possibly . . . find a husband. But Amelia soon finds herself contending with some decidedly off-list trouble, including the Honorable Captain Harold Roughtower, whose eyes are fixed on her fortune.

Excellent narration, hiccups on audio editing.
Revisado: 04-09-25
As stories in the Elemental Masters series goes, I found this... less than stellar. It seemed to take forever to actually *get* anywhere, and the final 2 chapters I found to be slapped on and rushed. This is not about Ms. Johnson's performance as the narrator, but Ms. Lackey's story. It was merely "okay," in my opinion.
But the one thing that I found truly irritating was the audio editing that had an audible click immediately after a chapter's final syllable. It was very jarring and ruined the flow of an otherwise pleasant listen, to have the "'[... word.]' *hiss-click* ... 'Chapter [Number].'"

Historia
Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares… but it turns out they're real.

This was new for me.
Revisado: 04-02-25
As I write this, I have just finished listening to Quicksilver. I'm still figuring out how I *feel* about it, but I'm glad I listened to it. I liked the characterizations, the cadences of Ms. Bloom's and Mr. Palmini's voices, and I found the story engaging. The take on magic and the fae were very interesting. My only memorable complaint is small and stupid: I'm used to hearing "gorget" be pronounced gor-JAY, not gor-JET, and I always found that jarring in the narration. Jarring, but not detracting from the story itself. I'm not certain if I'll pick up the next book in the series, but I'm glad that I listened to this one.
As I said, I'm still figuring out how I feel about this book.

I found the main characters enjoyable, the side characters believable, and the setting and situation, as presented, plausible. I liked the directions the story took, and I was satisfied by the ending.

When he orders her to kill the future emperor, she fails, but discovers a secret that could bring the whole of the empire to its knees. Interesting concept and storyline
Revisado: 06-05-24
I enjoyed it immensely, overall. I had a few nits with pronunciation, but that didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. I plan on acquiring the next in the series.
I enjoyed how magic works in this world, and the politics. It was easy for me to see and presented in such a fashion that it was "as read" and "this is how it's always been," believably. I found it easy to immerse myself.

Stephen Fry brings the richness of these magical stories to life in the original British recordings, available for the first time in the United States and Canada. Treat your ears to a performance so rich and captivating you'll imagine yourself in the halls of Hogwarts. Wherever you listen, the unmistakable voice of Stephen Fry is guaranteed to guide you ever more deeply into this magical story and transport you to the heart of the adventure.

The same great story, but with British flavor

Stephen Fry can read US Federal tax law to me.
Revisado: 05-10-24
Let me start with this: I love Stephen Fry's voice. It's rich, the tones are cultured and emotive, and his performance in everything I've seen (or heard) him in have been wonderful. I have Jim Dale's narration of this (also reviewed with high marks), but when Fry's narration became available, well, I know where my next 7 credits are going.
The story itself is entertaining, and yes, fun. There are some things in the text that have me cringe today, due to Ms. Rowling's public actions, but within the context of the story, it's logical and consistent.
The sound quality of the playback is excellent, as well (I have noticed on some other audiobooks, I can hear the narrator turn the page or drop the page off the reading rack. There is no such sound on this recording).

I'm actually writing this review several months after listening to it, but I wanted to note that I enjoyed the story, and the narration, and will likely listen to this again in a few more months. The characters were entertaining and the story was interesting. And Ms. Odom's narration was a very pleasant listen.

A very enjoyable listen
Revisado: 02-16-24
Aside from some disagreements on how some names might be pronounced, I enjoyed Mr. Woodson's narration of this book. His voices for the characters were distinct enough, and I got a chuckle at the parts where I was supposed to be amused, and had a tear or two well up at the sad bits. I would not hesitate to listen to a Woodson narration.
I've been enjoying Ms. Lackey's books for over twenty years, and I like this look at Queen Selenay's weapons master's background.

Fan of the book, not a fan of the narrator.
Revisado: 05-12-23
With all apologies to Ms. White, I was not a fan of her narration. I don't know if it was her choice or if someone was directing her and it was *their* choice, but there were a number of mispronunciations that really grated on my nerves. Character names (especially Talia's name), and using "mere" instead of "merc"... Unfortunately, the ebook version was scanned from printed text, so there are a number of "typos", where the scanning software auto-incorrected the rarely-seen "merc" into the oft-used (but not in this context) "mere." And that is from what Ms. White's script was taken. Highly annoying, and should have been given a good listening-through by someone familiar with the work, rather than *merely* listening for bad audio issues.

I enjoy the early Valdemar stories
Revisado: 09-20-22
I've been reading the Valdemar books since Arrows of the Queen first came out. I enjoy the Collegium chronicles because I like how the world is getting fleshed out. Mr. Podehl's narration is entertaining, and while there are a few words here and there that I grew up hearing differently, it doesn't detract from the performance. I especially like how the mental communications are conveyed in the audio format.
