Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Good story & narration
Revisado: 07-14-20
The writing is descriptive and well done. I feel this story is quite sad dealing with death of loved ones and coming of age. The narration is good, especially the accents, but sometimes the voice almost seems too soft and makes me feel sleepy

Historia
At 19, Lady Lydia Markham was beautiful, bookish, and naive. Her sheltered, loveless upbringing had not educated her in the ways of the beau monde or the men who inhabited it. So when she met Nathaniel, Lord Fairmont, it was all too easy to be swept away by his rakish charm and good looks. She was devastated when he did not propose marriage but joined Wellington's army instead.

Not a clean sweet romance
Revisado: 05-08-20
Basically a story of a dude debauching himself and nearly raping his love interest. Couldn’t finish. If you’re looking for a clean sweet romance this isn’t it.

Not a feel good story
Revisado: 05-07-20
There are so many problems with the story. The cousin assisting the protagonist to get in bed with a rake in order to trap him in marriage. That was quite sickening. The narration was much too fast I had to slow it down by a fraction. Very little pausing between sentences. I stopped listening halfway through. This was the first book by this author I have read and I probably wouldn’t read another one

Historia
For as long as Prudence can remember, it has been understood her sister will one day wed the eldest son of their nearest neighbor. Prudence, an aspiring romance novelist, believes her sister is mad to consider marrying a man she hardly knows, even if he will one day make her a countess. Unable to stand by and do nothing, Prudence sets out to help the awkward couple discover the best in each other with the hope they will eventually find love. What she neglected to foresee, however, was the possibility she might fall in love with Lord Knave herself.

A bit boring
Revisado: 05-07-20
This is the second book I’ve listen to by this author. And I was disappointed because it was a bit boring. The ending was unnecessarily drawn out. The narration was lackluster. It had a few good moments but for the most part it was kind of boring. I stopped listening to it for a while and then came back to finish it.

Wow So good.
Revisado: 05-04-20
Mimi Mathews has outdone herself on this one. The sheer amount of research needed to write about early travel is overwhelming and evident in this novel. I have read many early travelogues to Europe, Middle East, and Egypt. The author obviously did their research. There might be little errors in details here and there but overall, well done. The story and writing style is superb. This was probably my favorite book by this author. There’s adventure, romance, heart ache. It remains a clean story. Best of all, the author makes you feel as if you are you there. This is good enough to make into a movie or mini series.

Historia
It's been three years since Laura Hayes' father died, leaving her and her invalid brother to subsist on the income from the family's failing perfume business. But time is swiftly running out. What she needs is a husband, and fast. A noble gentleman who can rescue them all from penury. When a mysterious stranger arrives in the village, he seems a perfect candidate. But Alex Archer is no hero. In fact, he just might be the opposite.

Good historical drama
Revisado: 04-28-20
I appreciate the authors dedication to historically accurate information. The first half of the story is very sweet whereas the latter half is a bit darker and delves into the backstory of Alex Archer. There are some dark parts of his story that I thought was kind of unnecessary - basically the character was sexually harassed as a child and for me, it was unnecessary in an otherwise delightful story. There were a few lose ends I think. Did Henrietta marry George?

Good historical drama
Revisado: 04-23-20
This Author is really good at including historical details. Her stories are well written and usually pretty good. That being said there are a few things in the story that didn’t quite make sense. For instance why didn’t the male lead character just ask for her hand in the library? Her characters are not one dimensional which is refreshing. Her male lead characters often have scars that mar their figure as an obstacle to overcome. Overall I do enjoy this author and will read other books written by her.

Jack would rather be at sea than fixing the mistakes of his grandfather, the late Earl of Stansworth. Instead, he finds that inheriting his grandfather's wealth and title and securing the welfare of his sister and mother means joining the ranks of high society and living with the aristocracy. Luckily, Ivy Carslisle, the granddaughter of a dear friend of Jack's late grandmother, is willing to teach him etiquette and properly introduce him into society.

Sweet story
Revisado: 04-18-20
This was a sweet story resembling “My Fair Lady” only the roles are reversed with a few changes. I liked the story. There were some historical errors. Don’t think a lady would write a “manners/ etiquette” column in Regency or Victorian setting (unclear which it was). They had books for that sort of thing. I know because I have some from the 1920s. If you get past those, the story is enjoyable. I would read others by this author.

She wanted sanctuary... Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means traveling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar's Abbey isn't the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill - though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome - is anything but a romantic hero. He needed redemption... Justin has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison.

While I did binge listen there were parts where the story lags. I felt the story picked up once they got to London. Still not my favorite narrator.

Not my favorite by this author
Revisado: 03-30-20
Not my favorite so far by this author. Not sure how a rake could suddenly turn good and why exactly he fell in love with the female lead. Also not a real fan of this narrator although she did a good male voice I think.
