Historia
A hungry, stray dog is the last thing Cara Butter needs. Stranded in Georgia with only her backpack and a few dwindling dollars, she already has too much baggage. Like her twin sister, Hana, who has broken Cara's heart one too many times. After a lifetime of family troubles, and bouncing from one foster home to another, Cara decides to leave it all behind and strike out alone - on foot.

I found this book a bit shallow and the main character irritating at best. Very disappointed.
Revisado: 07-13-24
The story took on the subject of the foster care system, depression and addiction. In my opinion, it trivialize all of that. The main character was a coward who ultimately depended on a man to swoop in and save her. 1950 called and said it wanted its social narrative back. Just ugh.

Sadly, this is my least favorite Catherine Ryan Hyde novel to date.

I found Mary, as a character, very annoying and weak. Also, the narrator for Abby's character grated on my nerves. 🤷♀️

This story resonated with me and rung true.
Revisado: 01-04-24
Events in this story are similar to events that I and my family experienced. So many memories unearthed for me. I am left amazed that this book should appear in my life just 5 months past my own dear sister's death and 4 months past my father's death. It has helped me to start processing my feelings about long ago events. Kudos to the author and the narrators. I thank you. ♥️

Unfortunately poor narration
Revisado: 12-06-23
This book should have been riveting. It was not, in my opinion. I could not warm up to the narrators. I found my mind wandering and had a struggle to bring it back to the story. Pity. This is an important part of our history.

Historia
Could wilderness be our only hope? As our culture removes itself from the natural world, something very essential has been lost. But there is still one place we can go to get it back. Come along on a spiritual journey, away from a chaotic world of details, obligations, smartphones, and noisy machines to a place that is unspoiled, untamed, and free. Backpacking mostly solo, Stillman leads us to the heart of the American wilderness, where nature works her magic to heal and transform your life.

Scott Stillman, ironic name. His mind never still
Revisado: 06-08-22
I was sorely disappointed with this one. The author professes to seek stillness yet his thoughts seem babbling, chaotic and in general frenetic. The narrator's voice a pace were most annoying and I was happy to reach the end of it. I love nature, hiking and all things outdoors. This book was trivial, in my opinion. I got much more on this topic from Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh's writings.

Here, Nassir Ghaemi draws from the careers and personal plights of such notable leaders as Lincoln, Churchill, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., JFK, and others from the past two centuries to build an argument at once controversial and compelling: the very qualities that mark those with mood disorders—realism, empathy, resilience, and creativity—also make for the best leaders in times of crisis.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

I am a Steinbeck fan for sure, yet somehow I have waited too long to read this book. The story is absolutely riveting and the performance by the narrator perfect. A story of good and bad, as old as humans have existed.

Historia
It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Great material unfortunate presentation.
Revisado: 03-13-21
Presented by a rather irritating personality. Too bad, as I really am interested in this subject. The narrator injected far too much of his rather obnoxious opinion in his lectures. The fact that I listened to the entire series is a tribute to my natural tendency towards tenacity rather than any particular respect I feel for the narrator. Linguistics is a science, his opinions are irrelevant and annoying, bordering on offense. Find another instructor.
