The book is a nice guide through the maze of investing and particularly good at exposing problematic areas such as complex, but worthless investment schemes. I first read it in 1990 when I began investing and I am impressed with the expanded content in the current edition. Some sections, such as decreasing your lifestyle expenses, are tiresome and trivial, but the explanations of arcane strategies such as "put options", "covered calls" and "lifetime remainder trusts" are succinct, clear and very well done.

Like most references, the best way to use it is to read closely the areas you need and skim through the rest. Then when you come up with specific question like "what the hell is a zero coupon bond" you'll find a nice, understandable answer.

I thoroughly enjoyed having a lot of financial mumbo jumbo explained in a way I could comprehend.I'm I also agree with the author about not jeopardizing your financial future by hiring a predatory commission based advisory service.

When you reach our age (the author and I are exactly the same age,72) you have to realize that you are the only one who can assure your own future.

Read this book, keep it handy, and buy updated editions.
