Historia
A Child of the Jago is both thriller and condemnation of social conditions in the East End slums at the turn of the century. Boy hero Dicky Perrott is at heart full of humane instinct but his environment ensures his down fall. "It was my fate to encounter a place in Shoreditch where children were born and reared in circumstances which gave them no reasonable chance of living decent lives: where they were born fore-damned to a criminal or semi criminal career.

A little-known masterpiece, masterfully performed
Revisado: 07-03-18
Arthur Morrison’s short novel about a fictional Victorian slum called the Jago might best be described as Dickens without the sentimentality. It follows a young boy’s coming of age in a ragtag world of poverty and violence. A searing piece of social criticism, it receives a masterful interpretation in this recording, with a capable narrator who is able to evoke moods and bring life to characters through nothing more than inflection and tone. If you’re drawn to fiction from bygone eras, you’ll be well pleased with this recording.
