When you're doing a series like Horus Heresy, the Beast or indeed Dawn of Fire, across many books with many authors, some are bound to be duds. This is a servicable but boring entry into this series; when people talk about Warhammer books not being important works of literature, this is the sort of book they're thinking of.

Narrator is a talented veteran of Black Library audiobooks, but I found his performance on the weaker end compared to the past entries. Of particular note was the voice he did for Lord Tenobrous, which was way more menacing in Gate of Bones.

A feverish delve into madness borrowing from Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now

One of the greatest Warhammer novels ever written; a tale of broken men on a hell world fighting their demons (and losing), non-stop in its heightened narrative and uncompromising vision for the grimdarkness of the far future. The ending was the weakest part of the story, but the journey is worth it.
