Two of the best characters ever written. Royce and Hadrian are unique and absorbing. I love this whole series. Never a dull moment. Story is fresh. Writing is excellent. Narration is exceedingly well done.

Extremely good
Revisado: 01-22-23
The writing is great. The characters are very well developed and unique. And immediately interesting. They are not cookie-cutter, cut-and-paste types but are believable and likable and very human. The narrator did an amazing job. The voices were clearly distinguishable and easy to listen to.
Really well-done in all areas.
It was such a relief to find a new series and know I was going to love it.

Historia
Thomas Penrose is a village doctor in rural Cornwall. Popular with patients and friends alike, and handsome into the bargain, he lives in a romantic clifftop tower by the sea. It's a wonderful life - if only Dr. Tom could enjoy it. He's a veteran of the conflict in Afghanistan, fighting a lonely battle against alcoholism and PTSD. Determined not to inflict his troubles on anyone else, Tom keeps himself to himself. But fate has other ideas, and brings a handsome surfer crashing to his feet after a dreadful wipe-out on Porth Beach.

Historia
When the Supreme Being and his son decide that being supreme isn't for them anymore, it's inevitable that things get a bit of a shake-up. It soon becomes apparent that our new owners, the Venturi brothers, have a very different perspective on all sorts of things. Take good and evil, for example. For them, it's an outdated concept that never worked particularly well in the first place.

Historia
Every year has its share of notable events, but some years seem to capture the essence of a decade in a handful of months. The year 1954 is one such year. It began in January with a celebrity marriage heard round the world and then progressed through a series of major political, social, and cultural milestones that would echo through the next several decades. The years following World War II were a time of increased wealth and confidence, years that saw the rise of a solid, increasingly powerful middle class in America.

I admit I scoffed at the idea if there being anything all that special about 1954. I listened to this twice straight through. I’m gobsmacked. Oh my god. 1954 was insane!!! This was so intense and brilliant.

Grimdark, yes, but not remotely nihilistic. There is depth and power and great twists. And maybe, eventually, redemption and hope. Not yet. But maybe someday.

The greatest philosopher of all time is offering to sell his soul to the devil. All he wants is 20 more years to complete his life's work. After that he really doesn't care. But the assistant demon assigned to the case has his suspicions, because the philosopher is Saloninus, the greatest philosopher, yes, but also the greatest liar, trickster, and cheat the world has yet known - the sort of man even the Father of Lies can't trust. Clever story. And the narration was smooth. My only problem was that the two main characters sounded identical and it made it difficult at times to track correctly who was speaking.

Overwrought and self-impressed
Revisado: 04-03-21
Wow. This was a bit precious. Every word was just gushed out and wondered over. And yet, none of it was particularly noteworthy. I think the narrator made the prose far more self-indulgent and purple than the author. I felt that I was intended to sit at her feet, enthralled with every little thought, every little exclamation at the end of each word or phase or thought. It was tedious and annoying. I need to get this out of my head.
