Historia
For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet, the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 06-02-24
This is a beautiful book that is both extremely well written and also fascinating. What makes it particularly unique is his experience as a journalist because he approaches his own experience with the same curiosity and tenacity as if he were reporting on someone else. It’s clear that he poured over his own medical records and interviewed all of those involved to narrate his experience, but he went a step further in weaving in others experiences, others research and asking beautiful questions of science and philosophy. I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time to come.

We tend to think of meditation as a formal practice we block time out for each day. But what if every moment of your life was your meditation? For Eckhart Tolle, meditation shouldn't be approached as a chore or a means to an end. Rather, meditation is something that you live. "The aim of meditation," states Eckhart, "is that it eventually becomes your normal state of consciousness." Essential Meditations with Eckhart Tolle points the way toward this quiet, constant state of Presence - where practice gives way to the realization of your innermost identity.

I keep coming back to this
Revisado: 01-03-24
I have listened to this so often I’ve lost count. I’ve listened to it while meditating and I’ve listened to it doing other things. I keep coming back because it resonates so well and it contains so many pearls of wisdom. I especially like when Eckhart quotes other spiritual teachers and philosophers because he manages to distill the message in a way that reveals newfound meaning, and it’s always so beautifully simple at it’s core. Very peaceful.

Interesting…
Revisado: 09-07-23
This was interesting and an easy book to get through. I found the out of body experiences very compelling and it was an interesting perspective. Some of the vacillation between pure understanding and moments of frustration seemed to contradict things she said at different parts of the book, but I suspect that it was a writing or editing issue and not a reflection of her experience. The description of the “teacher” had a very Dickens - Christmas Carol flavor and somewhat similar trajectory. Overall, I’m glad to have listened to it. She certainly has been through a lot and I’m glad she chose to share her experience. There were some very interesting take-always that I’m sure I’ll continue to think about for some time.

Feisty, passionate Beatrice Steele has never fit the definition of a true lady, according to the strict code of conduct that reigns in Swampshire, her small English township—she is terrible at needlework, has absolutely no musical ability, and her artwork is so bad it frightens people. Nevertheless, she lives a perfectly agreeable life with her marriage-scheming mother, prankster father, and two younger sisters— beautiful Louisa and forgettable Mary. But she harbors a dark secret: She is obsessed with the true crime cases she reads about in the newspaper.

Solid read for escaping the grind
Revisado: 07-04-23
I thought this book was the perfect choice for a relaxed summer holiday weekend. The vivid description of the town and its odd cast of characters was very appealing. It really did leave me guessing until the end with well-organized details that added depth to the narrative. I couldn't resist finishing it in just two days because it was funny, charming and compelling. The narration was excellent, with distinct voices for each of the many characters and well-timed delivery of the punchlines.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Interesting, but flawed
Revisado: 07-02-23
So, this was an interesting listen, not gonna lie, however, I feel like there was more potential in the plot line than was developed. The ending was lackluster and resolved nothing. But the superficial gossipy nature of the story makes for a reasonably fun summer read/listen. There was an opportunity to make the protagonist more likable so the plot could be followed with more empathy, but it seemed to be written as a tongue in cheek reference to a typical “Karen.” That being said a “Karen” should be exposed and that exposure should make the audience feel good, and yet… The entire ending was ambivalent and I feel like the author straddled a line between wanting to love their protagonist and wanting to hate them. Perhaps such is life? Perhaps the world is full of equally understandable and horrible characters, but even if it won’t sell, I hope the author takes a few stabs at alternative narratives because it didn’t quite add up for me in this book. That being said, it was interesting overall, not a waste of time and relatively entertaining. Would I recommend it? Yes. Comparatively, yes. Fun enough.

Not the book
Revisado: 09-14-22
It was interesting but it was not a reading of the book, it was the author going over bullet points ideas of the book, some of which were similar to other talks he’s given. Just not an audiobook. I’ve read several of his others but this was his first big book, and I wanted to hear how his writing and ideas have changed over time, but because it was him more recently reflecting on the ideas from the book, I didn’t have that experience. Still decent, but not what I expected.

Good book
Revisado: 03-03-22
The book was good and parts of it were exceptionally good. Personally, I found the narration to take away from the book. It was overwrought and sounded very unnatural and over the top.

Historia
In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That's how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to this audio the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

Appreciate his candor!
Revisado: 12-12-21
Love him, like him, don’t care for him, or hate him, his book is incredibly candid and clearly an earnest attempt to make sense of his experience. He doesn’t strive to show himself in a flattering light, but offers a glimpse into the unique experience of having been him. And there’s only one Bruce Springsteen, aka, The Boss.
I’m impressed at his self-awareness, his ability to see his ego as both the positive driving force of his incredible career, and also the cause of a lot of strife for both himself and others. I’m particularly impressed and heartened at his candid exploration of and candor around his mental health struggles.
I hope that the people who need to hear his story, do.

A MUST read!
Revisado: 02-23-19
This book is EXCELLENT! An incredible peek inside the process and cooperation within the FBI, it manages to help restore faith in the process of our federal justice department. Thank God for the men and women of the justice department who continue to dutifully fulfill their commitments, aside from their political convictions. To hear about the extreme contrast in interest and knowledge between our current administration and the past several administrations is full stop, CONCERNING. McCabe redeems his reputation and narrates an incredibly credible and informative history of his experience of his time at the FBI. Fascinating insights into Comey, Mueller, Holder and especially, Sessions. A MUST read!

Some nuggets, but boring
Revisado: 09-08-18
This book had a few interesting insights but oversimplified concepts such as social and business culture, and overemphasized some leaders effectiveness on their employees. Some chapters were exceedingly hard to get through and I did not like the authors “female” voice, as in when they tried to assume the vocal qualities of the females quoted. It sounded like he was making fun of them.
Chapter 7 was an interesting chapter and worthwhile.
