America has always been a divided country. Always. Rather than see division as a negative factor, we should all remember one-party nations lack freedom and liberty by design. The author shows us that our Founders were no different politically then than politicians have been in every generation since. This book will give you suggestions about incidents that you may want to research more. I was particularly fascinated by the “dower” slaves that worked on Mount Vernon. The complexities brought on by Martha Washington’s first husband’s will put both her and Washington in bad positions. The author did a good job bringing this painful part of our history to the surface by showing he hadn’t the legal power to free those slaves and the ones he did have power over married into the dower system. Another interesting topic was the difference between our calendar and the “old calendar”. It explains variations on dates of birth and death that we all find in our own genealogy. I wish he would have explained this further, but I will do my own research on it. In short, the author’s research was outstanding and I learned a lot.

I’m new to this author’s work. This won’t be the last book of his I read. All the features of a great (better than good) novel are here. The quest, conflict, flawed heroes, redemption, resolution, etc are all here. The author’s style is unique. He uses beautiful language and clever similes to describe ugly situations. Each chapter drew me into the improbable story. As I finished the book, I realized it was a “clean read.” There was no profane language, graphic sex, or graphic violence in the book. These things were often implied, but not spelled out. The author narrated his own book. He has the voice for it. He knew how to pronounce everything in his book and he knew what the author was trying to say. He also sang songs in the story. These songs and the act of singing them brought the story to life. The songs pushed it to a higher level of beauty. Finally, the acknowledgments at the end give the reader an insight into the author’s life and the circumstances that produced the story. Don’t turn the book off after the last chapter or you’ll miss the most revealing elements. If I had a shelf for the hundreds of audiobooks I own, this one would be on the highest, most elite shelf.

At first I was hesitant to read this book by a journalist from CNN. I’m glad I overcame my reluctance as I learned a lot from the book. Her thesis is that a corrupt election in LA snowballed into a disaster of epic proportions for all honest citizens of our nation. I think she proved her point. One thing that I took away from her study of the topic is the ballot box is the beating heart of our democracy. In the book, both parties were equally guilty of dishonesty. I agree. In the background, the parallels between then and now naturally run through the readers’ minds. However, then as now, BOTH parties must safeguard the electoral process. That means each party should abstain from even the appearance of impropriety. The “win at any cost” strategy is a loser in a democracy. I recommend the book as a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning the history of democracy in America. I also recommend it to all party officials of both parties as a primer in asking themselves the following question. “What can we do to ensure election integrity and satisfy the reasonable concerns of the other side?”

The book caught my attention as the protagonist was 14 in 1969. Same as I was. I identified with him in many ways. Vietnam was always in our minds like a computer operating system that runs in the background. It was well done and the narrator was perfect. Authors are given leeway in time and space to make things work. Maybe you had to be 14 in 1969 to know that the draft for Vietnam ended before we turned 18, although the war wasn’t over. I remember registering for the draft, but it was over. At any rate, the novel is outstanding and resolves well. It shows how a single day in one’s life can be the fulcrum that launches many consequences for decades in multiple lives. Well Done!

This book is marketed as a novel. I listened to it and didn’t understand that it was non-fiction until the end in the author’s interview. The entire first half of the book is a collection of character sketches. Many of them have no relevance to the murder. I kept waiting for a plot to emerge, but none ever did. I never knew there was such a thing as a nonfiction novel. The narrator was outstanding. I watched the movie after I listened to the Audiobook and I thought it chopped up the book and entered things that never happened in the book.

The author told a story that was probably more common than we realize. The age of Orphan Trains, TB, and Death provides the backdrop for a mysterious first person account of the time. Good people suffered from disease and greedy malefactors. Good characters appeared in ways that affirmed good eventually triumphs. The novel is written from a Christian worldview that isn’t overbearing or preachey. If you like tales similar to the “Bookwoman” books and “Cold Mountain”, you should like this one. The female narrator did an outstanding job reading the book. I’ll look for more titles by this author and narrator.

I'm a big fan of Charles Frazier and Will Patton. In the world of audio books, they are giants. This novel is set in the West rather than the old South or Appalachia. Frazier captures the voices of desperate poverty and rich landowners as they inevitably clash. The Works Project Administration's art initiative in public buildings is also critically important to the story. I learned a lot that seemed to resonate with the stories my own grandfather told me about wondering the country in search of work during the Depression. I give Will Patton the usual five stars for capturing Frazier's intent. I give the story itself four stars because it was very good, but just short of outstanding. For me, the ending was slightly off and lacked full resolution. I'm sure Frazier would say that the ending requires the reader to think and read between the lines. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but, for me, it makes the novel four, instead of five stars.

The book is a nautical historian’s nonfiction account of a shipwreck. The research is remarkable. Anyone who is a fan of Melville, O’Brien, and Lord Byron should read about the HMS Wager as it inspired all of them. I gave the work four stars because the author got “preachy” about colonialism. I suppose it’s in vogue to do a hatchet job on our ancestors. I don’t mind criticism of colonialism if the author points out what alternative system was available. All of us today derive the benefits of British colonialism by living in America. Just my two cents. Four stars is still an excellent book and if you’re into history and survival stories, you should put this volume in your library.

A RARE Book of Unsurpassed Storytelling

I have over 400 titles in my Audible library. If they were ranked in order of excellence, this book would occupy the first place. I didn’t know what to expect from a 21 hour book. Having no expectations, I started it having been disappointed by the 20+ hour book I finished just prior to committing my time for this. Wow! This book has everything in it. It’s long because it intertwines several stories in one book. Many actions and minor characters have backstories that give the reader a richer understanding of not only what a character is thinking - but why.

The research must have been daunting and on par with “The Hunt For Red October.” The subtitle says it’s a sea story, war story, and a love story. That is true, but it also has a complete courtroom drama story as well. That is not a spoiler as it is revealed at the beginning of the book. The book is also timely as it resonates with today’s headlines out of Israel and Iran. The author is extremely articulate and well grounded in morality and the war of good vs evil. When the book was all said and done, it made me proud to be an American and it made me proud of our military and veterans.

The narrator’s performance was outstanding. He captured the author’s message perfectly and the protagonist’s voice exquisitely. I’m sorry there are only five stars available.

Did the author become incapacitated and his secretary had to throw together his notes? How disappointing the third book is. I feel as though I should change my reviews on the first two. When you have so much invested in the series, you’re obligated to push through. The third book was a total let down. I’ve never seen the protagonist of any book or series of books be discarded like trash. The heroes of the first two books were all sent to oblivion or exile. What a break with the rules of fiction! The war or whatever that mess was in book three was anticlimactic at best. Resolutions? Nope. A showdown with the evil villainess? Not so much. It was so convoluted and confusing the publisher had to add a “bonus short story” after the epilogue because they apparently forgot to include a critical battle scene in the book. As I said, I feel bad for giving the first two books five stars as other customers will invest 50 hours in the series before they find out it ain’t gonna pay off.
