I loved the magic system in this book! It was interesting and different and I had no problem keeping up with how it worked. The protagonist can be a little antagonizing at times but that seems par for the course for this genre.
I thought the narration was great on both scores.
I'm eagerly anticipating the next book.

Tropey and predictable

It's exactly how it sounds. You will probably figure everything out before the second half and get tired of Poppy being such an idiot all the time. The narrator leaves something to be desired..

A promising story, a disappointing book

The story of Caraval was so good at first. Then the love triangles started. Next comes the cast of all beautiful, well-dressed, vapid characters. Don't forget all the pretty dresses, girlish ideals and annoying sentences full of food analogies, fake colors and nonsensical descriptions like, "he smelled like broken hearts and spoke like shimmering water" or "the coach had buttercream cushions, curtains like fudge and smelled like butterflies in June." I liked the story of Legend but Garber's writing style could only appeal to 14 year old aspiring beauty queens. Oh yeah, and the ending was super lame.

Wow. The movie was beautiful, the book, genius.

Del Torro's movie was beautiful, well-acted, a cinematic masterpiece of storytelling. The book, however, goes even farther, sharing each fairy tail behind the blooming story in a way that makes every part of it so much deeper. Aside from the beautifully done weaving of an amazing magical world, the writing itself is magical and enticing. I'm adding this to my list of all-time favorites.

Be prepared

Be prepared for a good first third and then for the rest of the book to be tedious and annoying, chuck full of self-pity and annoying back and forth love triangle nonsense.

Is it just me?

It seems as though these books are getting less and less interesting.. Blah blah Bill obsession, Sookie is horny, Sookie gets beat up, everyone thinks she's pretty and charming and she thinks herself pretty and charming, etc. The writing is also getting played out. Harris extremely redundant. Overall, the HBO show was more exciting

The story pulls you in, the writing does not

I think we can all agree that the story is interesting. I know I'll read the last book and overall I like the series. However, the writing is just.. awful. Every feeling is unreal, every description is over the top and the comparison of everything to a color is so annoying your eyes will get stuck from rolling them so much. "It smelled of memories and pain," "it was the color of melted silver and dreams," "he felt like a nightmare wrapped in stardust...." etc. etc.
None of the imagery is relatable because none of the words used to describe people or scenes make any sense.
Then there's the fact that every boy is beautiful and kissing is just so great. I know it's for younger audiences but it's so juvenile sometimes, its painful.

Good series, long-winded

While enjoyable, the series is very drawn-out and can feel somewhat long winded at times. This probably would have been better as three books instead of five.

A fitting end

I loved this whole series! The narrator change between books 1 and 2 was not unwelcome like it typically is. I do wonder where everyone's accents went, though...

Magic, action, strong characters, strong enemies

I loved this book and loved even more that there wasn't a crap load of romance and pining over one another like most annoying books about magic. Strong story and characters with a hint of humor and heartbreak.
