I read this when I was a kid, and it was great to revisit it. It’s amazing how much it’s affected my thought even though me and Mr. Adams may not agree on everything, we do agree on what’s funny.

Historia
Unlikely tales are the most fun to tell. The long, strange trip Eddie DeGarmo has experienced over a half century in the music business is full of such stories. From playing keyboards at 10 years old in his first 1960s Memphis rock and roll band in the shadow of Graceland and Johnny Cash, to his own massive tours filling auditoriums and stadiums around the world with DeGarmo and Key, one of the first Christian rock bands. He successfully transitioned from his pioneering artist career to accomplish music executive cofounding trendsetting Forefront Records.

Historia
Born into slavery in Kentucky, raised on the Western frontier on the farm adjacent to Daniel Boone’s, “rented” out in adolescence to a succession of steamboat captains on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, the young man known as “Sandy” reinvented himself as “William Wells” Brown after escaping to freedom. He lifted himself out of illiteracy and soon became an innovative, widely admired, and hugely popular speaker on antislavery circuits (both American and British) and went on to write the earliest African American works in a plethora of genres....

A good biography of a man who has been lost history
Revisado: 02-18-25
William was born in the slavery in Kentucky, and eventually decided to liberate himself. But unused to the harsh conditions of the north he ended up getting aid from a white Quaker in Ohio whose name was Wells Brown. William chose his rescuers name as his own and will go onto be involved in the underground railroad and anti-slavery movements. He also wrote several books and collected anti-slavery songs in the “Anti-slavery Harp“. My favorite story of his was after the Civil War, while making speeches in Kentucky in support of temperance, he was betrayed by another black man who led him into a trap of some white men that intended to murder Brown. Brown was tied up and they were taking him to his death when they were interrupted by a man who said one of their friend was very sick and possibly dying in a state of delirium. Though Brown was a medical doctor but he told his kidnappers that he was a witchdoctor and could help the afflicted man. They agreed and Brown secretly injected the sick man with morphine which only knocked him out but the murderers thought since their friend was sleeping calmly, the magician had cure him. When the leader of the gang complained of sciatica, Brown claimed he had a spell to cure that too, which was again just morphine. By this time, most of the thugs were either drugged up or asleep and William Wells Brown was able to slip away and escape his premature end.

Historia
July 18, 1969: A car driven by Senator Edward M. Kennedy plunged off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, off the coast of Cape Cod. Mary Jo Kopechne, a 28-year-old former staffer for Kennedy’s brother Robert, died in the crash. The scandal that followed demeaned Kopechne’s reputation and scapegoated her for Ted Kennedy’s inability to run for the presidency instead of acknowledging her as an innocent victim in a tragedy that took her life. Kashatus’s biography of Mary Jo Kopechne illuminates the life of a politically committed young woman who embodied the best ideals of the 60s.

An injustice on so many levels
Revisado: 01-05-25
The book in spite of the author trying to give both sides of the picture cannot cover up the horrible injustice regarding the life of this poor woman, the victim of a unrepentant, power-hungry force of destruction in the man of Ted Kennedy. One would say that the blood of Mary Joe is on the hands of all the political forces in the Democratic Party that helped keep Kennedy from paying for his sins in addition to the sycophantic voters of Massachusetts who kept electing the monster of the Senate time after time.

In American Awakening, Joshua Mitchell compares today’s secular politics of identity - skin tone, gender, and sexuality - to the religious awakenings of America’s past. The book asks where the clerisy of identity politics came from, how identity politics claimed a death grip on liberalism, and how can it be defeated.

Prophetic
Revisado: 01-01-25
It’s a bit depressing but once you hear it, you can’t unhear it and all of the nefarious signs one would need for proof are all over our culture wherever you look. I even just last week did an interview with someone who used a phrase that was clearly from the new Marxist critical race theory handbook even though that person is a devout Christian and should know better.

A painful but necessary expose
Revisado: 12-19-24
I wrote a short story a while back about a building where some children were being exploited, mutilated, and then executed. Outside the building was some Christians pleading with the people inside to stop the atrocities. But also outside was another Christian pointing his finger at the larger group of Christians and claiming that they were the true force of injustice in the world, the single Christian repeatedly looking over his shoulder to see if the people inside the building were witnessing his attacking their critics. This is pretty much the reality that Megan Basham presents in her book, evangelical leaders obsessed with pleasing worldly forces that will dispose of them as soon as they are done using them. But surprisingly the book ends on a very inspirational and hopeful note, pointing out that those that submit to God are in the right, in spite of their sometimes imperfect attempts to pursue righteousness.

Richard takes you on a journey that few have experienced, from his early days as a student at Oxford to the wild, lascivious nights of being a disco DJ touring the clubs of Europe to coming to America and breaking through into the LA radio scene.

Get to relive the greatest decade through a man at the center of it
Revisado: 11-21-24
Is this probably the best audiobook I’ve ever heard in that Blade takes the time to play audio clips from the actual people that he’s talking about. As far as the story, it is what it is- parties, rock ‘n’ roll, excess, suicide, etc. I’m not sure why, but there must be a law in Britain that when writing an autobiography, they must include the embarrassing circumstances of losing one’s virginity, which blade fulfills. Otherwise, if you love bands like Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and others from the time, It’s worth a listen just to hear about his interactions with them.
