Historia
Hailed as one of the world’s masterpieces of psychological realism, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high-court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face-to-face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth?

Every inch a Tolstoy
Revisado: 01-24-23
Exactly what I've come to expect from a novel by Tolstoy. Except that it's so short, I listened to it twice in a row. A scathing criticism of the expectations and lifestyle of high society. Causes the reader to pause and reflect on the meaning of life, and how it can be lived well.

Never gets old
Revisado: 05-30-22
A beautiful story of the tragedy and fragility of the human experience. Tolstoy shows us how the soul can either triumph or be crushed by the smallest moments of our lives. And our hearts break for both.
The reader was ok. Not convincing with the male dialogue. I think she spoke as women would speak, not as men would speak.

His determination to make amends leads him into the darkest reaches of the Tsarist prison system, and to the beginning of his spiritual regeneration.

Soul Changing
Revisado: 05-12-22
A classic by every right! Tolstoy at his best, as if one could pick. This story is so compelling, so thought provoking, so beautiful, the listener can't help but change for the better, permanently. Tolstoy challenges and heals us as we take this extraordinary journey among the best and worst of humanity.

Historia
Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

Historia
Many of us know we're putting too much pressure on our kids - and on ourselves - but how do we get off this crazy train? We want our children to succeed, to be their best, and to do their best, but what if they are not on board? A few years ago, Ned Johnson and Bill Stixrud started noticing the same problem from different angles: even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking any real motivation. Many complained that they had no real control over their lives.

A Great Calming Breath
Revisado: 01-23-21
I HIGHLY recommend this book for all parents! His tone of calm reassurance is much needed in the overly anxious parenting world of today. Great reminder that kids from ALL walks of life and mental/emotional backgrounds tend to do better when they feel empowered over their own education and other life choices. I thought I gave my kids plenty of choices, but I was inspired to let go (while not walking away) in even more areas. Thank you for sharing this perspective!

Historia
In Glow Kids, Dr. Nicholas Kardaras will examine how technology - more specifically, age-inappropriate screen tech, with all of its glowing ubiquity - has profoundly affected the brains of an entire generation. Brain imaging research is showing that stimulating glowing screens are as dopaminergic (dopamine activating) to the brain’s pleasure center as sex. And a growing mountain of clinical research correlates screen tech with disorders like ADHD, addiction, anxiety, depression, increased aggression, and even psychosis.

An informative downer
Revisado: 01-10-21
The author, Nicholas Kardaras, gives a voice to what I have suspected for over 20 years; that screen time can be extremely harmful when used excessively, especially by children. Screen addiction is real, and Kardaras gives us hope that there is a way out. I appreciate the abundance of scientific studies cited and the detailed accounts of real people, which are admittedly, disturbing.
This book contains many sexual references which are not appropriate for little ears (which happen to be constantly about me while listening). My 6 year old does not need to know the sordid details of cyber sex, or how the dopamine rush of many video games is similar to orgasm.
I am glad the book ended on a positive note, but most of it appealed to my proclivity for doom and gloom.
Overall, I feel extremely vindicated by my caution with screens.

Historia
Socialists and feminists have long targeted the family as an enemy, even the enemy. For socialists, the family is an obstacle to the full power of the progressive state. For feminists, the family denies female independence and equality. Today, however, the battle has grown even fiercer, as socialists and feminists have found a global ally in the United Nations, which is using its extraordinary power to undercut the authority and the sanctity of the family around the world - even in the United States.

Set against the vividly drawn background of ancient Rome, this is a timeless story of adventure, faith, and romance, a tale of spiritual longing and ultimate redemption.

This is a classic for a reason!
Revisado: 08-05-19
I love how this author combined Roman history and Biblical history into the same story. It really helped me to put things into perspective and to see the Christian story from a Roman point of view. This was wrotten long ago. Do not expect modern sensibilities to be taken into account here. This was written by a man, from a man's point of view. There are some touching love stories intertwined.
