Short stories and fascinating afterwords

I’m a fan of Mr Howey’s, and so I picked this short story collection up. When a short story was over there was an afterword. Now usually I just skip authors comments as they rarely make for an interesting listen. This was definitely the exception to that rule. I almost couldn’t wait for the afterwords.

A well told story about Appalachia

Barbara Kingsolver did a very good job writing a story about Appalachia. The narrator was perfect. And then the author flinched at the end. I can’t say much without giving away the ending but I was disappointed. It seemed so out of touch with the rest of the book. Still a good book, but not a great book.

Think life is going along too well and this can’t last? Congratulations! You’re right. Now we get into the details of how and why society is on the verge of an epic collapse and there is little we can do about it. Such a heavy topic might be depressing but the author keeps it moving along at a fast enough pace you never really get weighed down by the heavy subject matter. Add in a few jokes and you’ve got a great book like this one.

Imagine a borderline paranoid journalist and a meth addict team up to write a book about a government investigation into said meth addict who seems to have inadvertently ended up in a national security situation. Now imagine you have no way of determining what is real, what is drug addled hallucinations, and what is coincidence. This is Chameleo by Robert Guffey.

Great style of writing, but too little substance

I listened to this audio book in one long drive. While her style of writing pulls you in, you’re never sure what you’re being pulled into. Is it a behind the scenes look at law? A tell all about cases she was involved in? A rumination on feminism? An ode to her love of Kardashians and weed? Strangely it’s all of these and more. Perhaps, however, that is the problem. It tries to do too much all at once. You only get a rough approximation of what some of the people she interacts with are like so it’s hard to care. The cases jumble together and everything feels vaguely rushed. Overall has potential but doesn’t quite live up to it.

One of the odder true crime books I’ve ever listened to.

The whole book is obviously heavily researched but extremely strangely presented. Im over half way into the book and the author still refers to the perpetrator as “The man from the train” and gives no indication he is going to reveal who this person is anytime soon. He spends a great deal of time attributing certain crimes to “The man from the train” while not giving any linear timeline. The author jumps from crime to crime forward and back in time seemingly at random while always promising more later. While I don’t doubt the author believes he’s connected all of these crimes, the evidence he has presented so far is less than compelling. To be clear, claiming a serial mass killer ranging from Oregon to Georgia with lots of points in between in the early 20th century should require a ton of evidence and it doesn’t feel like the author has presented his case well.

Fascinating...for locals of Lancaster Ohio

This audiobook is probably fascinating for locals of Lancaster Ohio. All others are likely to be a bit bored. The history of the Anchor Glass company goes on too long. The individuals aren’t really fleshed out so you have a hard time distinguishing between people. You’re hours in before you get to the story of the current situation without feeling in any way entertained.

A great audiobook that illustrates the dangers of privatizing the public services. If the privatizing and limiting of the national weather service doesn’t upset you, nothing will.

If you’ve followed the story of Silk Road this book won’t give much new information.

Any additional comments?

This book is so focused on technical details that he almost forgets to put a story in. While I loved some of his previous work, this book was almost painful to sit through (and full disclosure I still am not finished).
