Not too bad
Revisado: 02-10-17
I had a hard time choosing my rating. I would have liked to give it a 3.5 but one must choose either 3 or 4 so I went with the 3 which means I liked it.
This is a story that gives some color and background to the movie "Rogue One". You learn much about the background of various characters such as Krennic, Galen and Lyra. You also run into Saw although there is not much depth there. You also get to learn more about how the death star super laser works and how sometimes people can be manipulated into to contributing to something that they otherwise would not. That part is a little unconvincing to me but it worked out.
The story certainly was interesting but I think I liked learning more about the background characters in the movie the most. I certainly look forward to seeing the movie again when it it released on blu-ray.

Historia
The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements: You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world...or you can join the service. With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth.

It was good, but was similar to other books I have read on the genre. I am not sure I will continue at this point.

Refreshing take on religion in sci if
Revisado: 08-05-15
This is a story of mankind's run up against a powerful and overwhelming alien. The story takes place after this conflict has started and details the impact that a couple of individuals can have on such events. Good stuff it is.
As for the religion part, it is there but is nothing overwhelming or even takes up much of the story. The refreshing part is that it is not something portrayed as bad or something that had negative influences within the world this story creates. That is much different in that most other stories, when they touch upon religion, make it out as a influence that drives evil or poor behavior and in many cases something that makes those involved backwards. This type of handling of religion is so common that it is a trope in science fiction and easily predictable and thus boring.

Good OSC Stuff
Revisado: 10-08-14
This was a pretty good book. If you have read OSC before and like how he develops characters and plot then I think you will find this book being a typical Card book. Easy read and I only found a couple of difficult spots which I will touch on below after the spoiler warning. I know this is the first of a trilogy and overall I though the pacing was good but the ending was a little jarring for me. I will be reading the next one soon if not next.
*** SPOILER ***
Ok. I found the back story of colonization and the mishap through time pretty cool. I assume it was intended that the reader figure it out pretty quickly but it was still interesting and I looked forward to that part of the story at the beginning of every chapter.
I did find some of the time jumping difficult to follow once or twice and I am still not sure why the kids had the capabilities they had. I hope to figure it out better in the next book.

Lack of excitement
Revisado: 10-03-12
Well, I did like the story concept but for me the "big reveal" just did not satisfy me. Also, it seemed to drag on the last fourth of the book. Having said that, I have no plans to read he second one.

The weakest in the series
Revisado: 09-13-12
This one was ok, not nearly as good as the first two. Big area in the middle about multiculteral groups learning to work together etc, blah! I guess I am glad to have finished the series, but this is the weakest by far.

Historia
Throughout the Bible, followers of Jesus are commanded to submit to Him as their King. They are told to obey and follow, faithfully and without hesitation. Every time Christians utter the word Lord, they make a subtle yet profound declaration - that God is their Master and that they belong to Him. In fact, the Bible describes believers as His slaves. They have been bought with a price and now live for Christ as a people for His own possession. But go into most churches today, even flip through most Bible translations, and you won’t see or hear the word slave anywhere.

What I expect from MacArthur
Revisado: 05-23-12
The basic premise of the book, that the word slave is somewhat mistranslated as servant is nothing new. But it does present a good background and explanation of what slave and slavery meant back in the day the bible was written.
The book also is used as a platform for MacArthur to make the case for Calvinism and it does present the case for the concept of Calvin???s TULIP very well and is backed up with appropriate bible verses etc. The argument for/against Calvinism is old and interesting and certainly one that Christians can have without coming to blows. I can appreciate this books presentation on the idea.

I really wanted to like this one....
Revisado: 03-27-12
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, not really. Mostly because it does not resolve central question.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
A bigger bone thrown to this old dog concerning the central mystery would have been nice. I am trying not to spoil anything and I know that the journey is half the enjoyment in addition to the destination but we never get to the destination of knowing who the mysterious race is.
