Historia
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

Breathtaking. Deeply warm, human, brilliant, heartbreaking, beautiful.
Revisado: 09-30-23
I'm so grateful to Zadie Smith for bringing this work of genius so vividly to life in her reading of it. A work of probing candor, studied economy, genuine warmth, incisive questioning, deep human compassion and lively intelligence.

Historia
Use your head. That’s what we tell ourselves when facing a tricky problem or a difficult project. But a growing body of research indicates that we’ve got it exactly backwards. What we need to do, says acclaimed science writer Annie Murphy Paul, is think outside the brain. A host of “extra-neural” resources—the feelings and movements of our bodies, the physical spaces in which we learn and work, and the minds of those around us— can help us focus more intently, comprehend more deeply, and create more imaginatively.

Thought-provoking with a helpful set of take-aways.
Revisado: 01-28-23
Introduced to the author and her work via an interview on Gretchen Rubin's Happier podcast, I dove into this book, even though I rarely read in this genre. While the interview raised hopes that the book would be wildly engaging, I did find my mind wandering (in context, maybe a good thing?). Nevertheless, I kept coming back for more and was glad I did. I learned a lot about a range of subjects, not least my own way of thinking and developing ideas. I'll carry many of the principles presented here with me into my every work and life.

Historia
After speaking to the international public for close to fifteen years about sustainability, climate scientist Dr. Nicholas realized that concerned people were getting the wrong message about the climate crisis. Yes, companies and governments are hugely responsible for the mess we're in. But individuals CAN effect real, significant, and lasting change to solve this problem. Nicholas explores finding purpose in a warming world, combining her scientific expertise and her lived, personal experience in a way that seems fresh and deeply urgent.

Painful, mandatory, hopeful listening
Revisado: 01-19-23
Should be required listening for everyone ages 8 to 88, but especially those of us in the narrow but most damaging percentage of the population guilty of the worst climate consumption.

Indispensable reading for parents embarking or well on their way in the college savings process.
Revisado: 01-07-23
Cannot urge readers strongly enough to buy and read this accessible, actionable guide to getting the most college for your buck. I read this when my oldest was a HS senior and wish I'd done so much earlier. On the other hand, some topics would likely have seemed too abstract before we had actually lived through them ourselves. Overall, a wonderfully listenable, engaging, slightly scary but generally encouraging guide.
