Historia
Edinburgh, 1853. Mesmerism is seeing a revival across the city. While most scientists avoid engaging with such quackery, the respected Dr Simpson has kept an open mind, testing hypnosis on his patients. But when Cora Carlton, socialite and wife of a wealthy entrepreneur, is mysteriously found dead in her home, whispers turn to rumours and rumours turn to fact, with all fingers pointing to her Doctor, Simpson. Desperate to clear their mentor's name, Dr Will Raven and Sarah Fisher join forces to find the truth about Cora's death.

Historia
The digital era is beset by distraction, and it feels like things are only getting worse. At times like these, the distant past beckons as a golden age of attention. We dream of recapturing the quiet of a world with less noise. We imagine retreating into solitude and singlemindedness, almost like latter-day monks. But although we think of early monks as master concentrators, a life of mindfulness did not, in fact, come to them easily.

A must-read for serious contemplatives
Revisado: 04-06-23
Kreiner captures the perpetual struggle of the "monkey brain" to rest in contemplation. She shows how the struggles we today have with focus and mental order are nothing new and, in fact, are inherent in a life of prayer -- if not actually constitutive. The 52 pages of notes provide a vast menu of sources for pursuing this topic further.
I have read the hardback twice and am now enjoying listening to the author reading her book. Kreiner is a fluent and erudite reader and handles Greek and Latin competently.

Soap Opera Overshadows the Science
Revisado: 12-29-21
I read this book for a layman’s treatment of complex eco science. While the author’s personal story is dramatic, well written, and compelling, the gushing emotionalism sucks the air out of the big picture.

The translation is fraught with grammatical oddments such as the use of nominative forms for objective pronouns, which is shattering to those who tend to be fastidious about such things. The narration is clean and not theatrical yet sensitive to the text. The pronunciation of classical names is unconventional but consistent. I never quite adjusted to Priam being pronounced “PREE-um” instead of “PRIGH” as in “high” — “PRIGH-am” or to Mount Ida as “EE-dah” instead of “EYE-dah.”

Historia
Nothing except the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is a greater miracle or wonder in human history. Jesus of Nazareth was foretold in the Torah and the Prophets centuries before his appearance and he was proved to be real and not a pretender due to his death and Resurrection. The early church grappled with all of this intellectually. Many heresies were confronted, answered, and dismissed. Throughout the 2000 plus years of church history, many of the early church heresies have reappeared over and over again. Whether you are Catholic or Protestant the answers are from the Word of God.

Indispensable document for any Christian library but uncomfortably and awkwardly read. Credit the narrator, who had the initiative to prepare this seminal treatise. To my knowledge, no other audio version is available.

Historia
Join Ratty and Mole on a journey of faith. This beautiful book, which may be used as a daily devotional through Lent or any other period of the year, reopens Kenneth Grahame’s classic children’s novel The Wind in the Willows. The much-loved characters of Mole, Rat and Toad become the perfect allegory for the grand adventure of faith, from our terrifying first steps into and beyond the riverbank, to the challenges, temptations and triumphs that await us as we journey into the world, with Jesus by our side.

Brief and simple meditations
Revisado: 04-14-19
Many believe that The Wind in the Willows is something of a fifth gospel, and these brief and accessible meditations attempt to demonstrate that. The listening experience is, unfortunately, embarrassingly and jarringly undermined by the reader’s mispronunciation of “gaoler,” which is the British spelling of “jailer,” as “GOH-ler” instead of “JEI-ler.” Since the word occurs dozens of times in the episodes of Toad’s adventures, the effect is devastating upon an otherwise pleasant reading.

"...there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." So says Rat, as he welcomes the lonely Mole to the community of the River. Whether messing about in boats, touring in Toad's motorcar, or simply relaxing at home, Mole, Rat, Otter, Toad, and Badger demonstrate the honorable human characteristics of kindness, patience, and tolerance toward all that have made this classic tale beloved by generations since it was first published in 1908.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Outstanding narration!

The story is packed with action, significant for our time and illuminates the complexity of radical Islamic terrorism. The narrator is spectacular. Without extreme theatrical pretensions, he brings each player to life, realistically switching between voices and accents without becoming ridiculous. A 10-star performance.
