Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

As a scientist, I am picky with choosing science fiction stories. Alastair Reynolds is the post modern Arthur C. Clarke of science fiction.

A Masterpiece of Intricate Psychological Horror
Revisado: 10-13-20
I have listened to this book twice and it has inspired many paintings!
Dan Simmons remains one of my favorite authors because of his ability to incorporate dynamic characters into well researched stories. Magic, philosophy and science grace the pages of all of his stories.
The Terror is no exception.
Simmons incorporates myth, legend, and history into a terrifying world of ice and survival.
A must listen for all!

Historia
Around 250,000 people have had their genomes sequenced, and scientists expect that number to rise to one billion by 2025. Professor Steven J. Heine argues that the first thing we will do on receiving our DNA test results is to misinterpret them completely. Despite breathless (often lightly researched) media coverage about newly discovered "cancer" or "divorce" or "IQ" genes, the prospect of a DNA test forecasting how your life is going to turn out is vanishingly small.

Gripping and Thought Provoking
Revisado: 12-15-19
As a budding biologist and geneticist in an era of growing biotechnology and gene editing, I am thouroughly interested in the ethics and struggles of genomic sequencing and gene editing of this day and age. Epigenetics is a new field that requires extensive research, and it is beginning to dawn on scientists that, as Steven Heine so eloquently puts it, DNA is Not Destiny. This book is an eye opener, and easy to understand for those who have little to no background in biology or genetics. It reveals how much more research in the field of genetics needs to be done, and it reveals that (surprisingly) we are more than the some of our genes.

Historia
Mort, like many teenagers, is gangly, unpromising, and struggling with a menial job - in his case, as Death's apprentice. He can barely handle his simple task of ushering souls out of Discworld, but he really screws up when he meets the beautiful Princess Keli, who is scheduled to be assassinated. Going against his boss's wishes, Mort kills Keli's assassin instead, which angers and interferes with Fate. But Mort's heroism seems to be for naught, since Discworld proceeds as though Keli had been killed.

Fantastic, Hilareous, and an Excellent Story
Revisado: 12-04-19
Nigel Planer is a phenomenal voice actor that brings to life Terry Prachett's Discworld. The characters in this story are unique and relatable, especially Death (ironically). Not only is this a great fantasy satire, but it is also a great story. I highly recommend this book!

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

A Little too Long with Little Developments
Revisado: 12-04-19
Edoardo Ballerini is a fantastic and engaging narrator. Five stars for his performance. Unfortunatly, I think that the swerve tended to "swerve" offtopic a few times, and thus made it longer than it needed to be. I also think that Greenblatt's viewpoint was a little one sided. He also makes a lot of assumptions about people's actions and personalities by saying, "this must have happened" or, "he must have done this." This added too much speculation into an account that should have been an historical look at what catipulted the start of a new era.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

I normally don't listen to/read books like these, but I thought that I would give it a shot (no pun intended). I love it! It is paced like a documentary, but without need of the visuals. James Dommek Jr. is a true storyteller and investigator. You won't be bored as you follow Dommek's quest for the truth in the Alaskan wilderness.
