I must be tone deaf; no problem with the narrator
Revisado: 02-16-20
Everyone's ranting and raving about the narrator. I didn't notice any problems. I loved the storyline and wish I could be half as good as the author. Kendra is my hero, living in a hotbed of male chauvinists while bringing to the 1800s skills that few men or women in 2020 can conquer. This too reflects upon a brilliant author. Her character development is impeccable and her transitions between books are sublime. I've listened to all four and actually, by the end of book one, I was a fan. Now I'm a dedicated fan. I watch Julie McElwain's page for more releases. She beats Stephen King in my single credit a month. Get past the reviews about rotten narration and enjoy Kendra, out of time, out of place, and making her way even in a hostile world.

Little Women itself “has been read as a romance or as a quest, or both. It has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth.” Little Women has been read “as a means of escaping that life by women who knew its gender constraints only too well.” Alcott “combines many conventions of the sentimental novel with crucial ingredients of Romantic children's fiction, creating a new form of which Little Women is a unique model.”

Alcott never fails but ...
Revisado: 04-23-18
I have never had all four books so I was excited to listen to them at last. Narration ruined the experience. The narrator would double-click, clear her throat, and move on. The double click and throat clearing was not edited out. Or she would begin speaking in the wrong voice, go back and speak in the correct voice, but the wrong voice wasn't edited out. So maybe it wasn't the narrator; maybe it was the editor. Whichever it was, it turned these four books into a distracting mess to listen to. But I maintain that Alcott cannot go wrong.

Rex Stout could not possibly have approved these
Revisado: 07-10-17
Nero Wolfe is a lecher who drinks beer out a can and belches like a sailor. Archie is after every skirt in the boroughs and Nero Wolfe thinks that's the funniest thing ever. The narrator who I think so little of I cannot even remember his name, speaks Nero with a nasal tone that sounds like a bad cold and Archie with a broad Bronx honking sound. Fritz only showed up once in the adventures I've listened to, and that time, only with Nero bellowing to him to get the car because Archie is in trouble. And to top it off, during Nero's grand recap of the case, he turns to Archie to explain it. I can't believe Stout approved these but he must have. He died in 1975. These monstrosities come from the 20's. Maybe he was really strapped for funds. Whatever the case, this is not Nero Wolfe.

Historia
Archie Goodwin is chipper as he strolls home from his weekly poker game, money in his pocket and a smile on his lips. He has just reached Nero Wolfe's stately brownstone on West 35th Street when a sedan whips around the corner and two gunshots ring out, nearly hitting Goodwin. It is a warning, and the message is clear: The next bullet will not miss.

Not the best I've seen since Stout himself wrote
Revisado: 11-04-16
I was sad to have come to the end of the available Rex Stout Nero Wolfe books but then I was excited to find that Goldsborough would be taking over the series. I approved heartily of the upgrades to the office, like from a typewriter to a PC. I'm not so comfortable with the upgrade to the relationship between Archie and Lilly. It was rather deliciously non-transparent when Stout wrote it and I think it should have stayed that way. While every author has the right to do as he wishes with his characters, these are not Goldsborough's characters. They are Rex Stout's characters, and they should be respected as such. They were not themselves in this book. It is not Goldsborough's best by any means. Obvious clues went right past the great Nero Wolfe, and Archie was a playboy and lady's man without much of a brain to be found. Fritz doesn't know what language he speaks anymore, or maybe the narrator just doesn't know. Vivid, fascinating characters of Rex Stout's books have become foul-mouthed, not very smart, and much in search of a "skirt." Stout's books were not considered pulp fiction with a hard mouth detective and a secretary who could have beaten up the detective. Stout booted his characters up with class and panache. They lost all that in this book. They're just common stupid people who drink too much, swear with every sentence, and miss the most fundamental clues. Goldsborough was off his feed on this one. I am optimist. I hope more will come and they will be a measure better.

Robert McCammon Never Disappoints
Revisado: 09-07-13
I have never heard an audio book read by Tom Stechschulte before, but I have to say that he is superb. While this version of Swan Song is not a dramatization, the reader transmits plenty of emotion in his voice, drawing us into the story.
Post-apocalyptic literature always has a hero or heroine. In this case, Swan is simply loveable and in many ways, the girl next door. You can't stay separate from her; she is a strong character who will not bow to the evil that chases her, but she is also a little girl who misses her mother and doesn't really want to be Swan.
Stephen King wrote the collision of good and evil in The Stand, but McCammon did it better; Swan simply refuses to bow. She insists upon loving that pesky evil guy, which confuses him and makes him very angry with her, but her love disables him and he cannot effectively fight her. Swan is a gentle savior of her people and you read the ending of the book almost wishing you were there as she comes to heal your trees and help your crops, and spread the love that is Swan throughout your land.
I, at any rate, keep hoping McCammon will write a sequel.
