Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Vietnam
Revisado: 09-08-24
Many thanks for writing a story about Vietnam. And for presenting women as the heroes they are. Vietnam was central to any baby boomer, whose parents knew the relief of the end of WW2. We grew up with the chaos, anger, heartbreak, and disillusionment of government that the tragedy of Vietnam brought into our lives. This book gives us perspective to make some sense of how it affected us. It celebrates the extraordinary music and independent thinking of a new generation. That new generation knew humanity had to try and change.
I hope other fictional authors follow Ms. Hannah‘s lead in examining the stories which still have to be told about Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s.

This is my first book by this author. I will add her to my list of good writers. Not only is it a carefully crafted, unpredictable mystery, it is modeled with deft language and clever description. Outside of a few clues, like cell phones, you would have trouble placing it in time. It could be 19 century as easily as 21st-century.

Historia
An elegant, original, and compelling novel, set against a gaslit backdrop of social and political turbulence in early 20th-century London, Falling Angels draws a picture of family life that exposes the prejudices and flaws of a changing time. Chevalier ( Girl with a Pearl Earring) "shows imaginative skill in two neatly accomplished surprises, and the denouement packs an emotional wallop," says Publishers Weekly.

Perfectly Titled
Revisado: 02-24-24
This is historical fiction that book ends the burials of (hot mama) Queen Victoria, and (the ultimate adulterer) King Edward VII. A 10 year interval.
It was a time of veiled human desires, and the beginning of progressive 20th century change.
The book is written in an oral history format. Each of the characters give their versions of events to create a story that is riveting. One you cannot wait to continue.
The title says it all.

Early 20th Century Detroit
Revisado: 01-30-24
This is an excellent historical fictional story of immigration, assimilation, courage and intellect of people who worked in the early years of the Ford Motor Company. These were brave, curious and welcoming people. As all immigrants are. They bring much to our country.
Sadly, it ends during the Depression when the world was on the brink of another war. Two characters in the story are not well resolved at the end, but the unspeakable tragedy we all know they experienced is probably better left unsaid.

Masterful storytelling
Revisado: 12-14-23
This is an engrossing web of intrigue, with lures dangled in the very beginning until the very end you can never guess what happens. It is one of those rare books where you like it so much you have to discipline yourself not to finish it in one sitting every minute of every hour was well spent on this one.

Revisado: 08-18-23
This is a tour of life and those who know how to live it. Food, friends (all notable) and places, peppered by the remarkable character of the author’s mother. She gave it a unique flavor, but more importantly she was the story. The creative and artful use of language is inspiring, too.

Historia
Manhattan’s East Village, 1993. Dive bars, DIY music venues, shady weirdos, and hard drugs are plentiful. Crime is high, but rent is low, luring hopeful, creative kids from sleepy suburbs around the country. One of these is Jack S., a young New Jersey rock musician. Just a few days before his band’s biggest gig, their lead singer goes missing with Jack’s prized bass, presumably to hock it to feed his junk habit. Jack’s search for his buddy uncovers a sinister entanglement of crimes tied to local real estate barons looking to remake New York City.

This is a master storyteller. He grabbed my attention in the first chapter. He charts humanity’s progress (albeit small and slow) in its attempt to embrace other human beings from the 1950’s to the present. A gripping look at life in full. Life’s ups downs and value are all captured here.

Between the World Wars, the six Mitford sisters—each more beautiful, brilliant, and eccentric than the next—dominate the English political, literary, and social scenes. Though they've weathered scandals before, the family falls into disarray when Diana divorces her wealthy husband to marry a fascist leader and Unity follows her sister's lead all the way to Munich, inciting rumors that she's become Hitler's mistress.

Sisters
Revisado: 05-08-23
The Mitford sisters are fascinating. And this is another look at 3 of them in their young adulthood. We get to see, know and never begin to understand the incredible intelligence and independent thinking of people raised and reared by the same parents. This book visits the passions of Diana (a Fascist), Unity (a Hitler stalker), and Nancy (a respected writer and author). There is a brief visit by Jessica (an avowed Communist living in California). The family dynamic makes them an endlessly engaging subject.
