All the Stars
Revisado: 11-09-23
I read and enjoyed War and Peace. Anna Karenina is an entirely new level of masterpiece. Tolstoy captures our minds and quickly and completely they can be altered by events or other people's actions. It's really incredible. Add to that I would listen to Maggie Gyllenhaal read medical labels and call myself lucky. Having a master of her craft read a master of his was a true pleasure.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Terrible Book. Great Performance.
Revisado: 06-21-22
I almost stuck it out just for Porter's performance, but this book was just too bad. I get that this serves as some sort of revenge fantasy for the politcal right, but the 1 dimensional villains of this story and see-through stand-ins for the Clintons are only excellent in their illustration of how divided we've become as a country. What a bummer of a book.

Historia
In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles (micro-robots) has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive. It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour. Every attempt to destroy it has failed. And we are the prey.

Bad and Bad.
Revisado: 11-12-18
Passive aggressive protagonists are rarely a good idea. Same can be said for 2 dimensional characters. As for the read, a book that desperately needed help received none. Where humor and a light touch could have helped, the reader just payed the characters at the surface level in between lots swallows of water.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

A beautiful story. Somehow she reimagines and retells this myth by only adding to its genius and taking nothing away.

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

A perfect book receives a perfect read.
Revisado: 12-20-17
Ralph Ellison's words spring to life with Joe Morton's flawless rendition. The story and the imagery were sometimes so disturbing that I had to walk away from this book. But I always felt compelled to return and I'm so glad I did. A must read for every American.

Historia
In seven years of blogging only to the community of voice actors, specifically on the subject of voice acting, I've educated myself and others on the challenges of being a freelance voice artist. My first diplomatic answer to my caller is: being a success in voice acting requires more than just a voice. I've had to gingerly explain the real secret to voiceover success so often that it became clear: somebody needed to tell the truth about being a voice-actor. It's hard work! It's a business and should be approached as a business.

Voice Over Must Read
Revisado: 06-07-17
A wealth of information from an incredibly generous expert.
I flew through the book on the first listen. I will be reading this over and over to constantly learn, remind myeself of vest practices, and check up on my progression in this business.
If you're in voice over, you have to read this book.
