I love this story and I love Tim Curry so it’s a double win in my book.

When learning to write, you’re often told to start at the action. This book took 19 chapters to reach a spot that had action in it. Chapters 19 and on were wonderful. The narrator had a nice voice, but I had to speed up the book because it is originally read so slow. The main character, can’t remember her name, seemed a little daft for being 40 and I was let down and felt like the book failed be because one critique of a ghost that never happened suddenly dismantled her bed and breakfast...that of which the novel is based around. The murder was solved in less than a page, and honestly, I felt like I wasted a credit. Save yours.

This is a book I absolutely loved and hated all at the same time, but not because it’s endearing, or capturing, or nail biting...or even good. I love how it scared me in that it very closely parallels our reality as we are living it right now, but hated it because of how it was told. None of the characters were very memorable for me, I hated Mae, couldn’t stand Annie, and cringed at everyone else. I kept listening because I needed to know how it would end.

I felt like I was reading something trying to be related to our beloved Hunger Games, and at the same time by someone who didn’t know what the heck was going on. The first 3/4 of the book, I felt, is unnecessary. There were maybe one or two memorable parts, and I’d cringe at even an idea of a movie about this because there really isn’t any kind of basis to keep the viewer interested.

I couldn’t see any of Snow forming, and the parts thrown in to show his evil side felt like it was because Collins was concentrating too much on making him relatable and in love and forgot that she was supposed to be writing about a future man who didn’t care about anyone from any district. It would have been a perfectly good story to just keep the love stuff out of it. I kept hoping she’d throw a curveball in there that would blow our minds, yet nothing did.

I really can’t recommend this story to anyone, but wouldn’t stop anyone from reading it either. I’d just warn them to not get hyped up about it and, like Cursed Child, read it as a fanfiction. It makes better sense that way.

The heck is the narrator running the story with all that breathing and forced hesitation???? Not for those with breathing aversions!!!

... While the narrator wasn't Steve-o, I think he did a great portrayal of him. At times I forgot that it was someone else even! The story is what you would suspect from someone of this caliber but I didn't find myself skipping through anything or wishing it was over.

You can definitely tell the Harry Potter fans from those less fanatics judging by those who expected a story out of FanTASTIC Beasts and Where to Find Them. Upon first glance, I expected Mr. Redmayne to be reading the script, but then noticed the word 'library' on the cover art and it made sense that it was the actual textbook instead of the script. It would be amazing to hear a Quidditch Through The Ages read by Bonnie, or Beedle the Bard's Tales read by Emma to complete the selection!

Eddie did a wonderful job, had kept me excited to listen though this book has been part of my normal reading since it first came out in the early 2000's (plotting fan fiction Tales research, yakno), and made it feel like it was the first time I was being introduced to these characters. Very well done!

The only thing I had a problem with in this audiobook was the narration. Jesse is a great storyteller, but he isn't a narrator. The voices didn't bring to mind the characters that should be placed in your head. Most of them sounded the same and there's nothing I dislike more than a guy trying to do a female voice...and failing. As for the characters themselves, I think the dad is the weakest. Almost sounded like how children sound when they play make believe and the parents are scolding the babies. It's hard to believe any parent would act the way he does or say the things he does, and thankfully there's not much of him in the book to really matter.

Don't let this turn you away, it's worth the listen as the story itself is gripping and the book went by so fast! I didn't realize it was over until it was and I have the second book all queued and ready to go!

At first the narrator annoyed me but as the story progressed I cared less about the annoyance and fell in love with the story.

I also found it off that Kate took information of time travel as easily as she did, especially when it muddled her life up, as well as the fast pace love interest with Trey, but as with the narration, the further I listened, the less I cared.

I found this story gripping from the very first words, and very easy to fall into. It was hard to quit listening sometimes and listened to more than half the story in two days. Recommended if you like the time travel stories!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I'd probably recommend the actual book, but not the audio version. It would have been a better story to hear for the very first time with my own head-voice and not someone else.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mary Poppins, of course!

What aspect of Sophie Thompson’s performance would you have changed?

There's something about her voice that just sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me when she does the character voices. Mary Poppins, Jane, Michael...those voices were just fine, but the other voices are just so...gah! There's no words for what her voice turns into. Not squeaky, not fake. Just annoying. Especially the zoo scene when the snakes come in. I was pulling my hair out with her hissing on the 's' words and hisses in itself.

Did Mary Poppins inspire you to do anything?

...thank Disney for their wonderful version? Lol. This book is great, the story line is amazingly imaginative, but Disney just made it more palpable.

Any additional comments?

The Broadway is more closely related to the book than the movie version. If you enjoyed the stage play, you'll love the book. If you can't stand over-acted characters, the narrator will be annoying. It's almost like she tries too hard. It really kind of ruined the experience for me. Forced myself to listen to more than half of the story.
