I gave this a whirl based on its great reviews. It originally wasn’t on my list. Glad I did! Parallels are drawn between the visions of Amazon Indigenous and Australian Aboriginal people as well as other First Nation groups and what’s known about DNA. Many more details have been discovered since the writing of this book but the information here is no less important as a key link and outlining the basics of the parallels. Some of the shamanic journeys included involved the taking of various hallucinogenic plants and some not. The conclusions of several varieties of shamanic traditions were strikingly similar regardless of the traditional methods used to reach such states. This book also makes clear that we’re only scratching the surface of this study. Awesome, awesome awesome! I’ll be reading more to follow up on the more recent discoveries!

I gave this a try because there are few good books out there available as an audiobook that cover Gnosticism well. I think one of the very best for covering the history and texts of Christian Gnosticism is Elaine Pagels’ The Gnostic Gospels. While that book is excellent in terms of the history I wanted to hear more of the actual beliefs themselves. Of course nothing will replace reading the Nag Hammadi library. But Gnosticism as a whole extends prior to Christianity and is present in some form in most cultures worldwide and throughout history. So I was looking for something that would acknowledge instances yet still address the belief system as a whole. I listen to most books in audiobook form because I commute frequently by car. I was a little skeptical about this one because of the title and I wasn’t familiar with the author, but I’m very glad I chose to go through this. It was exactly what I was looking for. This book did such a good job of outlining Gnostic concepts, referring to texts and giving examples of how to ward off archons that I’m buying a hard copy to keep to refer to specific parts that I’d like to reference. Great job here!

While I do hope that as time passes we acquire more information through archeology or the discovery of new documents concerning the content of this book, I am beyond gratified that someone clearly explained what we do know and what we don’t know based on the facts that we have at the time this book was written. It is very sobering as well as exciting to know what we do know and what we don’t know. Thank you SO much, Bart Ehrman!!!

Great reading! Passionate and very clear diction. Recommended. Also the chapters are clearly marked on the audiobook version to keep your place and to jump to the right spot for future reference.

The first third of the book has information that is interesting but questionable, A few facts or “insights” are incomplete rendering the conclusions good to consider but not beyond reasonable doubt.

For example in reference to the Dogon from Mali in West Africa, they do have art that accurately reflects images of stars and galaxies not seen by Western eyes until the use of powerful telescopes. The book says they were able to perceive these images through meditation and being connected to the Earth and the Cosmos. The Dogon say that beings from the star system of Sirius B gave them the designs and told them what they represent.

Which is true, I don’t know. But likely the end result is similar in that they have these designs through some form of connection whether that was a literal physical one or a meditation-inspired one. I was a little turned off by the presentation that her interpretation that they got these designs through meditation (or mental-spiritual connection) only as a fact when the Dogon themselves will tell you differently.

That said and overall I found this book to be excellent. I learned things about myself and I will follow some of the guidance as I’m an emotional empath myself. For those people of color that I suspect may be empaths as well I will recommend this book. Thanks for writing this Jade Asikiwe!!

The majority of my teaching prior to 2020 was at the specialized high school and college level. I’d had it easy for over 15 years. A position opened up in the summer of 2021 that piqued my interest. But it required me to teach two 6th grade classes along with three high school level classes and an after school music program. Needless to say teaching 6th grade students in the Fall of 2021 with students returning back to school after the 2020-2021 pandemic shutdowns has been quite the task. I was in over my head with student behavior issues that I’d never before witnessed, let alone experienced.

Michael Linsin’s books have been amazing. My Spring 2022 classes have been far better for all involved than my Fall 2021 classes by a wide margin. I have several of Linsin’s book and this has became another favorite as #1 it works and #2 it focuses on teacher efficiency, effectiveness and having some time and headspace for yourself while you institute a system that works.

The ideas help build a sense of safety among students and that they are being listened to and heard. All while giving the teacher the mental breaks and proper recharge they need to keep going in a positive state. The book might as well have been called How To Go From Panic To Relaxed While Enjoying Your Job.

This is one of my new Linsin top three favorites to recommend!

I’m a new classroom music teacher. I have over 30 years experience in giving one-on-one private lessons, being a teaching artist, directing ensembles or leading music workshops in classrooms and auditoriums for audiences of all ages. But nothing truly prepared me for being a classroom teacher.

Especially in this post-pandemic time many younger students have lost years of training in classroom behavior and expectations. Even though my resume is more based in university and high school teaching and band directing my new school gave me two classes of special needs 6th graders. I have no experience in either elementary school teaching or special needs teaching. I know my subject material like the back of my hand but I had no methodology or classroom management for elementary school or for special needs.

This book has been a lifesaver. There is also a follow-up called “The Classroom Management Book” also by Harry and Rosemary Wong (make sure you get the book they wrote and not a similar title written by someone else). The First Days of School gives the theory and some concrete examples but The Classroom Management Book gives these theories as concrete lessons you can implement one at a time. Together they are a Godsend for people like myself who need a higher level of classroom management and teaching strategies to address the needs and education of young students coming back to school after the pandemic.

Thank you Wong & Wong and to the other authors who contributed to this milestone manual of teaching! NOW we can communicate the content to our students. What a difference a set of structured routines and philosophies makes! Big difference in the outcomes academically and how everyone feels about being in an environment of higher learning.

Goldman gives some background but overall only gives the most relevant information to get started on your own personal vocal toning practice.

Years ago when I first heard about the chakras the information seemed elusive, a bit overwhelming, foreign, and intimidating. I know more and I’m more comfortable now but I appreciate Goldman’s simple approach that actually gets you excited about making this a daily routine right away. There’s a lot more information about the chakras that’s not presented here but for me that’s the beauty of it. You can learn more later on your own with more encyclopedic volumes but this gets you started, feeling very comfortable, and singing the vocal toning routines right away.

And he emphasizes that its about intent and not about being a professional singer or what someone else’s opinion is about what you sound like. Goldman sings himself on the tracks and hearing him also dispels any fears and gets you wanting to jump in right away! This is far easier than I though it was and Goldman also gives several variations to fit your needs.

I completely recommend this to anyone who wants to start. You can also sing along to the tracks here or do the singing (or rather you’re “toning” not really “singing”) completely on your own. After listening to this I think you’ll be comfortable with both ways.

Everyone should read this and more importantly find the courage to practice the very simple techniques outlined here to start being able to “listen” to your own body’s messages. It’s wonderful how uncomplicated it is. It requires belief in yourself and the book makes the case for your ability to understand what your body is trying to tell you. I have become a recent fan of both Dolores and Julia Cannon and this book confirms that they are special people and have great life-changing information to share with you. This is the kind of information that makes your life deeper, more joyful, and more mysterious in a good way.

This is one of those titles that deserves to be read (or listened to) at least ten times. I listened to the audiobook. I can see listening once every three or four months for the next couple of years. A lot of wisdom. Living with the wisdom for a while than going back for another round would seem to be a great way to internalize this information. It’s rather simple, complete, and not too lengthy. I’ll definitely be coming back to this for Round Two soon!
