Far worse than Sapiens
Revisado: 09-15-20
I was on board for the first three quarters, but the last quarter slid into absurdity bordering on nonsense... and then in retrospect, the first three quarters that I liked really were just a recapitulation of parts of Sapiens. This one is getting returned.

Wonderful story

This is a book that I wish had read when I was ten, revisited when I was 20, and now again. I'll certainly be revisiting it, I'm just sorry it took me so long to get to.

Historia
From the time of Ancient Sumeria, the heavy infantry phalanx dominated the battlefield. Armed with spears or pikes, standing shoulder to shoulder with shields interlocking, the men of the phalanx presented an impenetrable wall of wood and metal to the enemy. Until, that is, the Roman legion emerged to challenge them as masters of infantry battle.

Historia
The English-speaking peoples comprise perhaps the greatest number of human beings sharing a common language in the world today. These people also share a common heritage. For his four-volume work, Sir Winston Churchill took as his subject these great elements in world history. Volume 1 commences in 55BC, when Julius Caesar famously "turned his gaze upon Britain" and concludes with the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.

Churchill does a surprisingly good job
Revisado: 01-30-20
I think this is a rare example of a well-done history from a historical figure. The book is interesting both as a history of the birth of Britain in and of itself, but also in as much as it shines light on Churchill himself and how he sees his role, and the role of his country in the world.

Historia
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.

I read Black Swan years ago in college, and I'm really glad I revisited the author. Very well done. Really interesting ideas that are the natural progression from the earlier books. applies the ideas to surprising number of sub-disciplines. Well worth the read.

Historia
In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.

Revisado: 11-25-19
Great both for folks who love Dan Carlin, and who are just getting introduced. I'm biased, as a long time listener the podcast, but it's more broadly somatic, as in not focusing on a specific era, and more focused in some ways than the podcast.

Weak recommend
Revisado: 11-08-19
the book is decent, mainly because not much has been written about the bis. But aside from the interesting chapters about its history in World War II, I was a bit disappointed. I was left with the impression that the bank has mainly been a bit player in larger economic and political events. title misleading.
the narration is fine, but the guys American accent is annoying, and he'll put on an accent for even a two or three word quote. Excessive and distracting.

Historia
In 1958, the US Air Force nuked the moon as a show of military force. In 1967, the CIA sent live cats to spy on the Soviet government. In 1942, the British built a torpedo-proof aircraft carrier out of an iceberg. Of course, none of these things ever actually happened. But in Nuking the Moon, intelligence historian Vince Houghton proves that abandoned plans can be just as illuminating - and every bit as entertaining - as the ones that made it.

Revisado: 11-06-19
This isn't bad, it's truly not. But even though the original book was allegedly started as a series of articles, this one feels far more episodic and far less cogent. I would strongly recommend Freakonomics. I would recommend superfreakonomics. I would not recommend this.

What do hurricanes, heart attacks, and highway deaths have in common? Can eating kangaroo save the planet? Levitt and Dubner mix smart thinking and great storytelling like no one else.
