In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Should be required reading in every American History class.
Revisado: 01-23-24
I am a dyed in the wool liberal and yet I found this book by a dyed in the wool conservative, riveting, inspiring, and compelling. Liz Chaney builds a case based on facts that are documented and supported by her own experience. She’s been in the trenches, seen and felt the damage that Donald Trump has caused. Her call to action for all Americans to unite as one, putting party politics aside to save our country, is a bold but necessary move. Those who ignore her call are putting us in the hands of a political tyrant. Let’s hope we are not heading into another Civil War because of this man who respects no law, court, or personal boundaries. Ms Chaney lays out the path of how this takeover can happen. It’s a nightmare I pray our nation will never experience.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Beautiful and tragic!
Revisado: 05-20-23
I enjoyed this saga of family history. The twists and turns of lives being lived and lost was riveting. The details of medical practice and art making added touches of reality that helped ground the characters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a book that takes you on an epic ride.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

The time flew by because I wanted to know what happens next. I couldn’t help but feel like I was reading a screenplay. I believe this would make a wonderful movie mostly because there were too many characters to keep track of. Charlie’s time with Mr. Bowditch was the best.

Revisado: 12-14-21
This book should become required reading for all middle school/ high school students. I am 76 years old and wish I had read this book in my youth. Will Smith has used his life experience to move forward as a better human being. His life lessons are ones we can all benefit from. His wisdom exceeds his short time on this planet. Thank you Will for your depth of insight.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

A full year of psychotherapy in a novel
Revisado: 01-29-21
The Midnight Library presented a beautiful picture of the universal life experience. It’s often said that life has its ups and downs but seeing them presented in the form of books that we can check out and return to find “better” versions was a very effective device for demonstrating lessons that many only learn after many years of therapy. Some of us, unfortunately, never learn them. I want to thank Matt Haig for his unique insight. I’m looking forward to reading more of his books relating to the human experience!

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Beautifully told story of love amidst struggle.
Revisado: 05-01-20
Trevor Noah is a force to be reckoned with and this story of his childhood in a racist system confirms it. Noah tells this sad tale with his usual humor and wit. But the truth of the matter is that it’s a miracle that any of the people in this shocking account of abuse survived. I was riveted by Noah’s journey out of hell. The beautiful part of the story was that the love shared by Trevor and his mom, truly protected them both from the horrors of a greatly dysfunctional system.

Written more than 10 years ago, this story speaks of the political strife our country faces today. Even though Boyle never mentions politics or politicians, his characters echo the divisions we see across the aisles in Washington.

Unexpected Joy
Revisado: 06-11-18
Reading the synopsis didn't really reveal much about this book. I had many thoughts about what the story might cover but none of my ideas came close. I was taken on a journey that crossed many worlds. I can't say too much or enough to express my delight in this story. I highly recommend this book to all free thinkers who enjoy unexpected reality with a large dose of subtle humor.

Unrelenting brutality
Revisado: 04-23-17
What did you love best about The Underground Railroad (Oprah's Book Club)?
Masterfully written. The inhumanity of slavery is presented in such a matter-of-fact unemotional manner, it's hard to say that one loved any part of this book.
Any additional comments?
I can see why this book has won so many awards for literature. It's sure to become a classic, as did Uncle Tom's Cabin but the best I can say of it is, that I admire the author's narrative style. However, the story is a sad and depressing history of our country's worst time.

Uninspired
Revisado: 01-13-17
What disappointed you about The Atlantis Gene?
The characters are flat and uninteresting. Too much tedious dialogue. I am more than halfway through this novel and I still don't care about these people. It just plods along with a few off color words thrown in to supposedly add spice but you need more than a curse or two to move a plot along. I'm returning this one.
