Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Loved it

It was just what I needed. I love the philosophy imbedded through out the story. I think I will listen to it again.

Historia
Young Jody lives with his ma and pa on a farm in backwoods Florida. Life is hard there: cutting wood, planting fields, hauling water from a distant sinkhole. It is dangerous: wolves and bears roam the night. It’s also lonely for a young boy. One spring day, Jody’s pa kills a deer for meat. When Jody sees her spotted fawn in the brush, he convinces his father they should bring the fawn home. Thus begins a year when deer and boy are never far from each other. But the day will come when Jody must make a terrible choice between his beloved pet and his family’s survival.

Must read for any age over 10. Great themes still apply today. Great dialogue and relatable characters. One of the few books set in the south during 1800s that does not contain offensive material. The narration was perfect. I could not stop listening.

Historia
Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their 12 children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins—aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Most interesting medical textbook ever written
Revisado: 12-22-20
It starts off somewhat slow but I am happy I pushed thru the first 20% because it is excellent. I have a new framework for how I think of delusional thinking. I appreciate how much the Galvin family disclosed to researchers and to the author.

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

The narrator is so spot on that I wish I could award 5 stars. Now I will have to give 3 stars to great narrators so 4 stars conveys her excellence. Of course Backman was superb as usual.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Lingering Impact
Revisado: 01-21-20
The novel started strong but then lulled in the middle picking up in the final third.
Perhaps the writer intended to slow the energy and pace of the story to reflect the staleness of the characters’ lives at that time. The story flowed from one time period to another and back smoothly without confusing the reader. I think I will appreciate the novel more over time as I consider the metaphors from the house to the portraits to the frozen vegetables. Danny’s character needed some more nuance and layers. He is too simple. The writing is beautiful. Tom Hanks is endearing as usual.

Satisfying True Crime Story
Revisado: 10-03-19
The story of Celeste Beard is interesting and satisfying. I could not put the book down because I had to learn how she would finally pay for her sins. This book and the Belinda Temple book are my favorite Casey books. I cannot wait to start another one. The abstract of the court testimony especially Deguerin’s questions is great. The narrator has a good voice. However, it is not necessary to create so many character voices in my opinion.

Historia
In the town of Ada, Oklahoma, Ron Williamson was going to be the next Mickey Mantle. But on his way to the Big Leagues, Ron stumbled, his dreams broken by drinking, drugs, and women. Then, on a winter night in 1982, not far from Ron’s home, a young cocktail waitress named Debra Sue Carter was savagely murdered. The investigation led nowhere. Until, on the flimsiest evidence, it led to Ron Williamson. The washed-up small-town hero was charged, tried, and sentenced to death - in a trial littered with lying witnesses and tainted evidence....

The detail makes the story
Revisado: 12-21-17
Grisham writes a detailed true story of wrongful convictions in Ada that I could not put down. His narration is very good too. He should narrate his Ford County books. I loved the story and the writing. Strongly recommend it.

Historia
They call themselves the Brethren: three disgraced former judges doing time in a Florida federal prison. One was sent up for tax evasion. Another, for skimming bingo profits. And the third, for a career-ending drunken joyride. Meeting daily in the prison law library, taking exercise walks in their boxer shorts, these judges-turned-felons can reminisce about old court cases, dispense a little jailhouse justice, and contemplate where their lives went wrong.

20 year novel was still fresh and relevant
Revisado: 12-11-17
I decided to read this novel because I had read a review that it was one of Grisham’s best. I agree in terms of schemes set into play. Also the setting and story of the book was peculiarly germane to today’s current events. I enjoyed it and recommend it.

I enjoyed this story more than the first Lottie Parker book. The first mystery was un-mysterious. I would like to see more growth and change in Lottie Parker for the subsequent books. A good read.
