Historia
In 1975, during the fall of Saigon, Phuc Tran immigrates to America along with his family. By sheer chance, they land in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a small town where the Trans struggle to assimilate into their new life. In this coming-of-age memoir told through the themes of great books such as The Metamorphosis, The Scarlet Letter, The Iliad, and more, Tran navigates the push and pull of finding and accepting himself despite the challenges of immigration, feelings of isolation, and teenage rebellion.

Would not read another from the author
Revisado: 07-22-22
Pro:
Finally a Vietnamese narrator for a Vietnamese book so the words are pronounced correctly.
Relatable experience whether you're an immigrant or not
Con:
It feels like the author used the thesaurus function every other sentence. I'm sure, as an immigrant, he's compelled to emphasize his background in literature, but it's unnecessary and detracts from storytelling.
Conversations recalled from childhood are unrealistic. Author attempts to paint the scene and can supposedly recall minor details which is irrelevant and unbelievable.

Historia
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

cool story... from a hypocrite/narcissist
Revisado: 03-26-22
thank goodness it was on sale. it's 10+ hours of listening to a man toot his own horn. he starts with, "it's not about him...," then proceeds to talk about himself with no learned values. he also claims his horrific childhood is what made him so different. even claims he is 1%. his childhood consisted of bullying and child abuse. bad.... but far from being in the top 1% of bad childhoods. he claims he is so different, but literally makes the claim that Michael Jordan is just another man. all of his success he attributes to his own will power to overcome mental obstacles. his failures he blames on external forces (ex. pull up bar, distractions, phantom foul call). worth a $3 listen. cool stories. just don't look for any motivation or takeaways. would have been better as fiction. if he was real and wanted to talk about mental struggles, he should have included his failed marriage

I'm torn
Revisado: 04-27-21
As a Vietnamese-American, I am glad the author points out some of the cultural aspects of hyper-sexualization and the actual atrocities that were committed during this time frame. However, there is a bit of hypocrisy as he repeatedly reverts to using the perverse behaviors to retain excitement. Thus, he is perpetualizing the American mentality of emasculating Asian men and using Asian women to fulfill their fantasies.
Also, as an Audible, the author could have reviewed to ensure the narrator correctly pronounced Vietnamese words. They were horribly off, in any Vietnamese dialect.

Seems like the first half of the book was just to set up the author's low key brag about his interviews with some of the killers.

2) at least he's honest and starts with his privilege
3) unrelatable to many because of #2
4) does not understand real world barriers
5) extremely egotistical narration
6) failsto understand that his "compound effect" started before he was born

Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.
