Terrible writing , very little sense of the ART . Found out after reading that it was written by a romance writer -/ if that’s your genre , gobble it up.( see the rave reviews)
I Imagine an actual nonfiction bio woukd have interested

Even the title should be the secret LIVES of sunflowers. Waste of time DNF and I’ll just suffer thru book club “ discussion “.

Historia
Four years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief, asking the Supreme Court to do something revolutionary: declare a law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. That call launched a remarkable, nearly fifty-year friendship.

Very little about invigorating and/or friendly dinners with RBG. Not much depth to the idea of friendship — other than stating that women in biz need a network of other women . Nothing thoughtful or funny or poignant here . RBG peripheral to most of the book.

Historia
When archivist Nadia Fontaine is found dead of an apparent drowning, Emily Snow is hired by Regents University to finish the job she started - to organize and process the papers of Raymond West, a famous Pulitzer Prize-winning author who has been short-listed for the Nobel. As Emily sets to work on the West papers, it begins to dawn on her that several items have gone missing from the collection. To trace their whereabouts, she gains unsupervised access to the restricted “dark archives”, in which she opens a Pandora’s Box of erotically and intellectually charged correspondence.

Revisado: 11-27-21
Too long and too pretentious; an intriguing dilemma is buried under a slog of words. The Regents U ( UCSD ) and Blacks Beach setting was wasted. Obviously intended as a noir homage to Chandler but falls short . Needed an editor not an archivist to hone in on what was a very timely ideas: artist’s work v artist’s private life, big donors controlling the archive, what’s the source of an artist’s inspiration, digital cloud storage replacing books ( now a space for galas instead of research stacks.) too bad the writing dragged all this under .

Historia
Joshua Rubenstein's riveting account takes us back to the second half of 1952, when no one could foresee an end to Joseph Stalin's murderous regime. He was poised to challenge the newly elected US president Dwight Eisenhower with armed force and was also broadening a vicious campaign against Soviet Jews. Stalin's sudden collapse and death in March 1953 was as dramatic and mysterious as his life. It is no overstatement to say that his passing marked a major turning point in the 20th century.

Not the last days of Stalin
Revisado: 06-04-21
Not focused on the struggle for power after Stalin’s death . About 1/4 of book is about the anti Jewish Doctors Plot unleashed by Stalin . But this event is not directly linked to the power struggle after Stalin’s death. It is just not the book I expected from the title. Cursory about works Geo political power chess, yet also not detailed about internal politburo power struggles.

Heist but so much more
Revisado: 08-27-20
A jewelry store heist gone wrong. Muscle cars .... BUT so much more. Fatherhood, motherhood, Blacks and whites, family . I fell into this book because of the characters and the setting. After reading a review that criticized the similes I want to add that they were one of my favorite parts, not overdone. Especially in an audible version. Narrator was outstanding . Hat tip for his voicing of Kia , the mother . Highly recommend especially if you are driving around !

clever plot, great narrator. invigorating to be in Germany -- new rivers! but too short! Develop the stories a little more in depth please, not all these novellas for the price of a novel. Maybe combine them into sets. Fun tho.

Historia
In 1959, a family of four were brutally murdered in Holcomb, Kansas. Perry Smith and Dick Hickok were convicted and executed for the crime, and the murders and their investigation and solution became the subject of Truman Capote's masterpiece, In Cold Blood. But what if there was a third killer, who remained unknown? What if there was another family, also murdered, who crossed paths with this band of killers, though their murder remains unsolved? And what if Dick Hickok left a written confession, explaining everything?

intriguing connection to In Cold Blood
Revisado: 06-23-19
First I think the narrator may have really made me want to know what the connections were between the antagonist (for lack of a better word) and the original killers in In Cold Blood. Because actually the story is a bit slow and really at times over the top unbelievable. I would have liked MORE psychological depth to the original killers as well as "Jerry Nolan". As it was a lot was set up and then the plot took over.

Whaling - I should have known it wasn’t meant for me
Revisado: 07-04-18
Did not like the narrator and the times and the whaler crew and first mate. Why— just too gritty yet somehow also over the top into cliche land , in my opinion. Hope I can get my refund , but I’ll admit that some may like it more than my visceral dislike.

Historia
Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager - obsessed with music, food, and girls - but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier - a move they think will keep him out of combat.

Once it left the Alps it went down hill fast
Revisado: 02-18-18
The earliest section of this book about the teenage Pino in the snowy Alps guiding escaping Italian Jews to safety in Switzerland was interesting and authentic if a bit breathless in its hero worship. But after he gets down to Milan the bathos and drama become repetive. True story elements get buried under the cliched writing. Needed an editor as do so many of these Amazon specials. Too bad because I do think with work trimming and focusing and letting the story speak for itself, it could have been an interesting and worthwhile read. The actual writing matters because frankly there is little suspense — we all know who won the war. Will Wheaton’s narration is adequate not his usual energy IMHO .
