Not sure why I waited
Revisado: 10-26-22
I passed over this book so many times because I thought it was something other than what it was. But when I began reading it, I couldn’t put it down. I liked it because it was full of love and sadness, of acceptance and rejection, of vulnerability and courage, of honesty and self discovery, and finally, I liked the book because it interspersed this painful reality with humor. There are parts of this story that will resonate with almost everyone, I think. And if it doesn’t, I wonder what kind of life life they’ve had. So if you read it, expect to hear some cringeworthy stories, some laugh out loud stories, some desperately sad stories, and prepare to learn something about yourself and others that have touched your life. We’ve all had of some trauma or a lot of trauma and we’ve all dealt with that trauma in different ways, with different support available to us, with different friends and family. and we are all still here on different parts of that journey. Some of us can choose how we respond to these experiences- it may even be a conscious decision for some of us, and for others that response may be more visceral, but we are all on a journey and we’ve all started from different places and we’ve all chosen different paths, and sometimes our paths cross. This book is the story of a beautiful journey that started from a bad place. I learned much from sharing this journey and I’m so glad I crossed paths with this book.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Charming despite the subject matter
Revisado: 09-03-22
I can’t remember reading such a charming and hopeful book dealing with death and loss. As an older woman who has also lost a son when he was a young man I identified with many of her thoughts and feelings. While this isn’t a deep or challenging book, it is a fun and different book that deals with a range of tough subjects and emotions while still being happy and hopeful. Also, the octopus character is marvelous.

Cute but not my thing
Revisado: 08-28-22
I don’t read girl lit or romances but enjoyed the Joan of Arc references and the descriptions of Paris. There were some enjoyable story twists and it held my attention but I didn’t gain affection for any character and I’m annoyed by stories where everyone is rich and privileged. If these things don’t bother you and you are looking for pure escape then it’s a fine choice.

Historia
Only 22, Emma learned to bake at the side of a master, Ezra Kuchen, the village baker since before she was born. Apprenticed to Ezra at 13, Emma watched with shame and anger as her kind mentor was forced to wear the six-pointed yellow star on his clothing. She was likewise powerless to help when they pulled Ezra from his shop at gunpoint, the first of many villagers stolen away and never seen again. In the years that her sleepy coastal village has suffered under the enemy, Emma has silently, stealthily fought back.

Everyone should read
Revisado: 05-04-22
This book, set during the German occupation of France and ending at D-day tells a story of war, of community, of horrific deeds and of amazing acts of selfless courage. The heroine, who steadfastly denies that title throughout the story is flawed in ways we can all identify with and yet commits acts that we all hope that we might also do under similarly threatening circumstances. After this book I felt sad and happy, inspired and horrified, educated and also questioning, as the protagonist does, because man’s fight against man often becomes man’s fight against god. What is the place of faith in war? The answer lies in our service to others and our love for others which takes so many different forms. This book is beautiful in the telling of a terrible tale, and it’s a tale that isn’t told often but is so important, and one that should be in the mind of us all as war and violence continues in our world.

Okay but …

I found the accents annoying. The characters were a bit trite. But, lol, the thing that annoyed me the most was a reference to hibiscus and camellias blooming at the same time. Maybe that happens somewhere in Mississippi but not in any place I’ve ever been.

Really good but not always relatable
Revisado: 09-05-20
As someone that has also lost a child but navifatedthat journey without the level of privilege that allows for medical transport across continents and diamond earrings and memories of Paris and because I had to return to making a living after bankrupting myself so I could be with my son, I did not have the luxury of “a year of magical thinking”. I had to grieve efficiently and well so I could walk back into a work environment without making others uncomfortable. But it was well done and I understood that feeling of standing outside of yourself as you go through the motions. Not too many generations ago in “society” we were given a year to grieve. But, the working classes were told to get over it, and some weren’t hardly allowed to acknowledge their grief at all. So I guess I feel that privilege is being rubbed into my face and it’s irksome.

Tight Entertaining Story
Revisado: 07-26-20
It kept me engaged and entertained. When I got sidetracked I went back and relistened to the parts I missed. I don’t always do that. I enjoy the Irish accents.

Stick with it
Revisado: 04-12-20
It took me a while to care. I found the references to so much sexual detail annoying and not significant to the story at the beginning (don’t read if you are a prude) but eventually I warmed to the various literary devices used by the author and became engrossed I the story which is together heartbreaking and funny.
