Historia
Sixteen hundred years ago Britain left the Roman Empire and swiftly fell into ruin. Grand cities and luxurious villas were deserted and left to crumble, and civil society collapsed into chaos. Into this violent and unstable world came foreign invaders from across the sea, and established themselves as its new masters. The Anglo-Saxons traces the turbulent history of these people across the next six centuries. It explains how their earliest rulers fought relentlessly against each other for glory and supremacy, and then were almost destroyed by the onslaught of the vikings.

A solid history of the Anglo-Saxons
Revisado: 07-11-24
Morris does a good job of synthesizing the available original sources and interpolating the gaps, while being careful to identify which is which. Very listenable history, well read.

Historia
Outsider. Hero. Rogue. If any man can do the impossible it’s Richard Sharpe. And the impossible is exactly what the formidable Captain Sharpe is asked to do when he’s sent on an undercover mission to a small village in the Spanish countryside, far behind enemy lines. For the quiet, remote village, sitting high above the Almaraz bridge, is about to become the center of a battle for the future of Europe. Two French armies march towards the bridge, one from the North and one from the South. If they meet, the British are lost.

Historia
Mark Franklin came from the American West to Edwardian England with two long-barrelled .44s in his baggage and a fortune in silver in the bank. Where he had got it and what he was looking for no one could guess, although they wondered -- at Scotland Yard, in City offices, in the glittering theatreland of the West End, in the highest circles of Society (even King Edward was puzzled) and in the humble pub at Castle Lancing.

Half ripping yarn, half portrait of a country
Revisado: 07-27-23
Set in the five years before The Great War, Fraser uses an improbable American character to describe England at that time. His technique is to tell a string of stories interspersed with character and culture studies. The effect is completely engrossing and educational too,
David Case is brilliant, as always, performing the many voices to perfection.

Another Fraser/David Case Success
Revisado: 07-11-23
Case was born to read the Flashman stories (and almost 700 others), as surely as George MacDonald Fraser was meant to write them.
This recording was made at the end of Case’s career and the timbre of his voice has deepened. (He was shortly to be diagnosed with throat cancer, which carried him off five years later.) But the verve of his reading continues and George MacDonald Fraser’s stories continue to entertain.

Historia
If only Flashman had got on with his dinner and ignored the handkerchief dropped by a flirtatious hussy in a Calcutta hotel... well, American history might have been different, a disastrous civil war might have been avoided, and Flash Harry himself would have been spared one of the most hair-raising adventures of his misspent life. If only... but alas, the arch-rotter of the Victorian age could never resist the lure of a pretty foot.

David Case pitch-perfect, story not the strongest
Revisado: 06-25-23
Davis Case is, as always, tremendous. When he reads. It’s like watching a stage production in your head. This isn’t the best of the Flashman chronicles — but that’s an improbably high bar, even for GMcF. It’s still a rattling good tale and history lesson.

Historia
It is 1860, and while China seethes through the bloodiest civil war in history, and the British and French armies hack their way to the heart of the Forbidden City, Harry Flashman hoodwinks them all. Once again, that supreme anti-hero of the Victorian era, the one and only Harry Flashman, is ready to rise to the occasion no matter what depths of dishonor he must plumb. This is the inimitable Flashman at his very worst. And, as all Flashman fans know, that means he's at his irresistible best in this, his most exotic and erotic, uninhibited and hilarious adventure yet.

George Macdonald Fraser’s ability to illustrate history using Flashman is unmatched. David Case was born and self-trained to read Flashman’s adventures. The combination is sublime … if you have a suitably wicked streak, 😜

The story of what happened to Flashman, the caddish bully of Tom Brown's Schooldays, after he was expelled in drunken disgrace from Rugby school in the late 1830s. This is the first of George Macdonald Fraser's hilarious satires starring Harry Paget Flashman.

Historia
From Rose Tremain comes the Booker Prize short-listed novel that “restored the historical novel to its rightful place of honor” ( New York Times). Robert Merivel, son of a glove maker and an aspiring physician, finds his fortunes transformed when he is given a position at the court of King Charles II. Merivel slips easily into a life of luxury and idleness, enthusiastically enjoying the women and wine of the vibrant Restoration age. But when he’s called on to serve the king in an unusual role, he transgresses the one law he is forbidden to break and is brutally cast out from his newfound paradise.
