Historia
When Inspector Peter Glebsky arrives at a remote ski chalet on vacation, the last thing he intends to do is get involved in any police work. He's there to ski, drink brandy, and loaf around in blissful solitude. But he hadn't counted on the other vacationers, an eccentric bunch, including a famous hypnotist, a physicist with a penchant for gymnastic feats, a sulky teenager of indeterminate gender, and the mysterious Mr. and Mrs. Moses.

A fun mystery with unfortunate conclusions
Revisado: 11-16-24
Tis is my third book by the Strugatsky brothers that I have listened to so far and I would place this as my second place in favorites of the three. I like that it wasn't super serious all the way through, but I also wish it was a bit more serious throughout because this novel is probably more banter/goofing than serious (which doesn't really start to show until about half way through), and then devolves a bit again. Most characters are either annoying or entertaining without really much of a balance of the two, but overall enjoyable work.

Red Schuhart is a stalker, one of those young rebels who are compelled, in spite of extreme danger, to venture illegally into the Zone to collect the mysterious artifacts that the alien visitors left scattered around. His life is dominated by the place and the thriving black market in the alien products. But when he and his friend Kirill go into the Zone together to pick up a "full empty", something goes wrong.

A Fantastic Sci-Fi Classic That Is A Must Read For Anyone
Revisado: 08-27-24
Roadside Picnic is one of those books that I always meant to read since I was younger hearing how it was a big inspiration for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, and I wish I had given it a chance sooner. Not all things need to be a grimoire sized tome to be enjoyable, Roadside Picnic is a perfect example of that where the story is great and wrapped up nicely in the end, but it also kinda makes you wish for just another hour or hundred pages of content, or another story from the universe. Stealth/low profiles are a big thing when in the zone but when allowed or in Town, Redric has some fun dialogue with his supporting cast while in the bar or his apartment. The narrator does a good job at giving people the kind of voices you would think they'd have from their descriptions and keeps a solid performance throughout the entire novel. If you enjoy Sci-fi I believe you will enjoy this book, I recommend it.

A fun adventure in A Wonderful Supernatural World
Revisado: 08-27-24
The Dead Take the A Train is a pretty fun read overall, being a fan of Kadrey it felt very reminiscent of the Sandman Slim series with different descriptors/language used. Julie is a wonderful protagonist set along with a fantastic cast of major and secondary characters, all of whom are great in their own ways, with Saint Joan being one of my favorites. The story is great, hits all the right boxes in terms of a supernatural title, has the Eldritch horrors, the not so human beings walking among the general populace, angels & demons, dark magic and culty organizations. While I very much enjoyed this title I do believe that the narrator fell short a few times throughout the book. Where she does an amazing job with giving most of not all of the female characters a unique voice, quite a few of the male characters sounded very similar or just not as there as the other characters. I enjoyed this book and the world itself is fun, exciting, all while being familiar in the same stroke because of prior experiences with the authors, and absolutely cannot wait to read and listen to the sequel whenever it comes around.

Fun Little Adventure
Revisado: 06-05-24
Great novella overall, the characters are fun, the story was pretty great, and while I know this doesn't take place in Slim's universe, it could fit right in honestly. Worth the time listening to it, hope to hear more about our rag tag team of hitmen.

A beautiful, ambitious angel stands on a mountaintop, surveying the world and its little inhabitants below. He smiles because soon, the last of humanity who survived the great flood will meet its end, too. And he should know. He's going to play a big part in it. Our angel usually doesn't get to do fieldwork, and if he does well, he's certain he'll get a big promotion.

It's a fun story
Revisado: 04-09-22
It's a very fun story that reminds me of the big setup in Lock Stock, Two Smokin Barrels and watching it fall to shit in front of the cast. The characters are fun and have the familiar wise ass banter that Kadrey does so well. I recommend giving it a listen.
