Far out on the Eastern Fringe, the realm of Ultramar stands alone. Having weathered the Word Bearers' attack on Calth and the subsequent Shadow Crusade against the Five Hundred Worlds, the Ultramarines primarch Roboute Guilliman now draws all loyalist forces to Macragge as he contemplates a new future for mankind.

Insight into many Primarchs
Revisado: 07-25-21
This story highlighted Guilliman and Kruze most of all but the Lion had some choice bits as well. Vulkan wasn't really himself, understandably, and that was fine. It was another solid entry in the HH series and I am glad I listened to it even though I'm not an Ultramarine fan.

Perturabo - master of siegecraft and the executioner of Olympia. Long has he lived in the shadow of his more favoured primarch brothers, frustrated by the mundane and ignominious duties which regularly fall to his Legion. When Fulgrim offers him the chance to lead an expedition in search of ancient and destructive xenos weaponry, the Iron Warriors and the Emperor's Children unite and venture deep into the heart of the great star maelstrom that haunts Perturabo's dreams.

Revisado: 10-07-20
If you are a fan of 40k the major beats for this story have been known for decades. what makes it fun is seeing the motivation and getting insight into Perturabo's psyche. If you enjoy the journey more than the end then this is a great read.

Historia
Of all the Legiones Astartes, the White Scars of Jaghatai Khan remain the most enigmatic and elusive. Born of a civilisation that prizes honour, speed and fearsome loyalty, their allegiance has yet remained unclear even as the galaxy is torn apart by Horus's treachery, and both sides have apparently counted them among their potential allies in the war to come.

Complex Relationships, excellent characters
Revisado: 12-14-19
Scars is a high point in the Horus Heresy series. The leader (Primarch) of the White Scars struggles with his place in the Imperium Man, as does his entire legion. Every member seems concerned with how the rest of humanity views them. Much as the Mongrols of actual history were considered brutal barbarians but in reality had a strong cultural system (in fact the first free public schools were created under Ghangis Khan) the White Scars are effective Warriors but strive to be measured and scholarly as well.
The legion learns of the destruction of Prospero by the true barbarian Space Wolfs at the same time they learn of Horus' betrayal. The book focuses on the legion and the Primarchs struggle to pick sides in the great war to come.
It really is a great dive into the world of the Horus Heresy. It might just be the best book of the series (so far).

Solid story with exceptional narrator
Revisado: 06-03-19
I'm not usually one for fantasy novels but figured I'd give this a shot because of the unique combination of kingdoms, magic, and steam powered robots.
Turns out that all makes for a good story! The characters felt fleshed out and made decisions that were consistent with their earlier characterization. No one seemed to make a dumb decision solely for the plot, a rarity in modern times.
I enjoyed the way magic seemed to work, it felt grounded and not overly powerful. It was like a tool or weapon more instead of something just used to get characters out of impossible situations.
The robots essentially having the mental capacity of a dog was a nice touch.
All around I would highly suggest this book.

Exceptional
Revisado: 04-06-19
Red Mars does an amazing job of blending science, politics, and culture to weave an intricate story of the first people to colonize Mars itself. The excitement mostly comes from the many varied debates about old societies and what should be used or thrown away from them when making this new society on this new planet. The book is full of unique and interesting characters, including Mars itself.
The narrator does a great job of making each character have their own voice.

Excellent Execution

This was a fun, witty story with a large and well acted cast. The story was a fairly common "man works too much, ignores family, learns lesson" trope but with a super natural flair and great dialogue. Highly recommended.

Historia
The Cadian Gate is broken, and the Imperium is riven in two. The might of the Traitor Legions, kept shackled for millennia behind walls of iron and sorcery, has been unleashed on a darkening galaxy. Among those seeking vengeance on the Corpse Emperor’s faltering realm are the Death Guard, once proud crusaders of the Legiones Astartes, now debased creatures of terror and contagion.

Voice Acting brings it to life
Revisado: 12-04-18
The story is almost exclusively from the perspective of members of the Deathguard and that is what makes it so fascinating. It is incredible that I found myself respecting some members of a group as vile and disgusting as the Deathguard.
The story was excellent but the voice actor deserves a ton of credit for truly bringing the characters alive. Such an impressive performance is worth any 40k fans time.

As an unnamed but unforgettable woman muses on her life—from meet cute to marriage and parenthood—her recollections inexorably build to a devastating truth. In this shattering performance, Carey Mulligan, star of the critically lauded drama An Education, captivates audiences with playwright Dennis Kelly’s harrowing ruminations on family, ambition, gender, and violence.

Historia
In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Unique setting and world
Revisado: 10-14-18
I first heard of Altered Carbon through the Netflix series and I absolutely loved it. The book is great as well with a similar plot but fairly different characters. It was interesting to hear a similar but different enough version, one that kept me guessing even though I thought I knew what the general outcome would be.
I highly recommend this book if you like noire, cyberpunk or semi-dystopian societies.
