A great sequel to Dispatcher, but darker, less humorous. Still going to listen to #3 today.

You know how sometimes a book just hits you? This one was profoundly impactful. It loosely follows that major plot points of “Huckleberry Finn” but Jim’s casual depictions of his experiences deftly adds depth. It’s more than just an adventure, it’s something I’ll be thinking about for days and years to come. And it saddens me how much of it is still relevant today.

It’s like if Deadpool was a 21 yr old lesbian on bodyguard duty… a pure escapist delight.

This book does A LOT: It’s magical sci fi, a coming of age story, a locked room puzzle, a splash of dark academia, and a murder mystery just for fun…and it does it all WELL. The voices are unique and fun and the story was addicting.

If Neverwhere had been co-written with Terry Pratchett…

From a former writer for the Doctor Who television series, this fast-paced and extremely funny police procedural murder mystery reads like “Neverwhere” if it had been a collaboration with Sir Terry Pratchett. It’s deserving of all the hype! I couldn’t stop listening.

Vera Wong is the Asian Auntie we all want in our life (but maybe not with the keys to our front door). The character development is wonderful. It’s laugh out loud funny at times. But what caught me off guard is how full of heart it is. I even teared up in the end. Brava!

Like PG Wodehouse but set in 1993 London

It’s like something from P.G. Wodehouse set in London circa 1993 else a very, very, VERY British “A Confederacy of Dunces”. It’s absurdist and silly while being dry and subtle. I can understand that a lot of Americans (especially younger ones) might not get the humor or a lot of the references. But if you’re gen X and familiar with British humor you’ll have a good time.

This is a meticulously researched and well-crafted tale of the sinking of the whaling vessel, Essex, by the white whale that inspired “Moby Dick” and the subsequent struggle of the surviving crew. If you’re into shipwrecks, this one’s for you! It was FASCINATING and OOOMPH a bit rough at times to continue with content-wise, but it was so incredibly compelling that I muddled through.

My favorite of Sophie Hannah’s Poirot books!

This is my favorite of those ghostwritten by Sophie Hannah and the closest to an original Agatha Christie of the lot. The ridiculous but stereotypical British archetypes are all there, most are unlikable yet recognizable characters. I think she nailed the pacing and didn’t overly complicate things while still surprising us. I liked that the Poiroit vs. Catchpool dynamic has matured. And the narrator was *chefs kiss*. All in all, well done!

This book is epic in scope and scale with different lands and cultures and religions so it takes a bit to get a handle on. But unlike George RR Martin, most of the characters you meet are important and you’ll see again. Not everyone of the “good guys” lives, sometimes they die quickly and shockingly, and the same for the “bad guys”. But I was swept up with the story and really enjoyed it!

Modern day Isekai cozy

You have a modern day Isekai tale featuring an Australian bloke plopped into a post-ascension Xianxia-type land that is empty of most of the cultivators. Despite becoming a cultivator who seems to progress in xi manipulation both easily and rapidly, our hero just wants to fish (something that the locals deem heretical). There’s a bit of romance, a lot of scritching of spirit beasts, and a lot of humor…but it’s still a cozy. It’s essentially Beware of Chicken meets He Who Fights Monsters.
