Historia
Elvar is struggling to consolidate her power in Snakavik, where she faces threats from without and within. As she fights to assert her authority in readiness for the coming conflict, she faces a surely insurmountable task: reigning in the ferocity of a wolf god. As Biorr and his warband make their way north, eager for blood, Gudvarr pursues a mission of his own, hoping to win Lik-Rifa’s favour and further his own ambitions.

Vendetta, vengeance, victory?
Revisado: 04-21-25
What a tale! While a truly grim story, Gwynne manages to make the reader care about many of the characters. Their bonds of family and kinship make them human even in the midst of hatred, angry gods, powerful magic, blood and gore. This vengeance is served hot. After all the Herculean efforts of the main characters and furious fighting subsides, do the characters feel it was worth the losses? The reader also feels a sense of loss but at least feels satisfied for the effort invested to listen to such a long and complicated saga. There are some loose ends at the conclusion, but perhaps there will be a fourth book in the same world setting. The narrator did a remarkable job with the difficult pronunciations. I felt like this made up for the somewhat monotone voice.

Historia
Centuries from now, the basic right to expand human intelligence beyond its natural limits has become a war-worthy cause for the Demarchists and Conjoiners. Only vast lighthugger starships bind these squabbling colonies together, manned by the panicky and paranoid Ultras. And the hyperpigs just try to keep their heads down. The rich get richer. And everyone tries not to think about the worrying number of extinct alien civilizations turning up on the outer reaches of settled space...because who's to say that humanity won't be next?

More for Revelation Space lovers
Revisado: 02-14-25
I thoroughly enjoyed filling in details of the RS universe, with back stories (and future histories) of many RS characters and places. Galactic North was a perfect ending to the collection with the future of mankind balanced on a knife edge in a ship appropriately called Hope. And don’t skip the author’s postscript!

Historia
Some say that to change the world you must first burn it down. Now that belief will be tested in the crucible of revolution: The Breakers and Burners have seized the levers of power, the smoke of riots has replaced the smog of industry, and all must submit to the wisdom of crowds. With nothing left to lose, Citizen Brock is determined to become a new hero for the new age, while Citizeness Savine must turn her talents from profit to survival before she can claw her way to redemption.

Just keeps getting better
Revisado: 07-07-24
Wow. Just when I thought this series could not improve on the last book, Abercrombie rings the bell again. What a masterful tale, “weaving” a complex plot together with more surprises and more depth of character. This is easily in my top 3 low fantasy series of all time. Highly recommended, but it is even better if you read all the previous books in this world first. JA manages to find important roles for characters the reader thinks are long gone. Never a dull moment.

Historia
Six million years ago, at the very dawn of the starfaring era, Abigail Gentian fractured herself into a thousand male and female clones: the shatterlings. Sent out into the galaxy, these shatterlings have stood aloof as they document the rise and fall of countless human empires. They meet every 200,000 years to exchange news and memories of their travels with their siblings.

Reynolds’ best?
Revisado: 12-26-23
This is a mind-blowing story with beyond galactic scope and a timeline of millions of years. I don’t understand some of the very negative reviews. One can’t make an accurate judgment about a book after listening for two hours. For me the major characters are well developed. The flashbacks to origins can be seemingly irrelevant but there is a great, but subtle link near the end of the story that may surprise readers. If you like hard science fiction that raises big questions without sacrificing an intersection story, I think you will like this book. I found it more satisfying than the Revelation Space stories. It is a stand alone novel unrelated to the RS universe. The only downside to what was an otherwise excellent narrative performance is that it is sometimes difficult to tell which of the major protagonists is speaking as the narrator does not always create sufficient distinction between male and female voices. The reader just has to pay attention. Highly recommended!

Historia
Late in the 26th century, the human race has advanced enough to accidentally trigger the Inhibitors---alien-killing machines designed to detect intelligent life and destroy it. The only hope for humanity lies in the recovery of a secret cache of doomsday weapons---and a renegade named Clavain who is determined to find them. But other factions want the weapons for their own purposes---and the weapons themselves have another agenda altogether.

A satisfying sequel
Revisado: 09-17-23
This book is even better than Revelation Space and I would rank it above Absolution Gap, the third book in the trilogy. Very satisfying in its depth of characters and builds clear bridges between Book 1 and Book 3. I found myself actually caring about some of the characters, which is unusual for me when I listen to a narration rather than reading these books. As always, the reader’s performance is exceptional. .

Historia
The shift toward automation is about to create a tsunami of unemployment. Not in the distant future - now. One recent estimate predicts 13 million American workers will lose their jobs within the next seven years - jobs that won't be replaced. In a future marked by restlessness and chronic unemployment, what will happen to American society? In The War on Normal People, Andrew Yang paints a dire portrait of the American economy. Rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation software are making millions of Americans' livelihoods irrelevant.

Prelude to a Presidential campaign
Revisado: 11-20-18
Yang is clearly running for something. He prepares the ground via thorough research documenting the serious problems and contradictions generated by capitalism. However, he cannot bring himself to draw the obvious conclusion, namely, that capitalism IS the problem and socialism is its most serious symptom. Instead he reinvents something called human capitalism, as if there were any other kind. The basic idea is that the intensifying contradictions of capitalism can be softened for the masses by giving people a basic stipend. This well worn idea that the State can create a kinder, gentler capitalism by redistributing income is nothing more than Utopian reformism. It does nothing to change the inexorable dynamic of capital toward its own destruction. Of course our capitalist system can meet this demand, and in return the contradictions of capitalism will only be deepened and prolonged as a consequence. That some “progressive” capitalists see the need for this type of socialist response speaks clearly to the deepening crisis. As Yang says, the alternative is revolution. Somewhere the ghost of Marx is smiling.
