good story, disconcerting narration
Revisado: 11-20-24
I particularly liked the character development of the bennet ladies in this story, but I can't get over the d r a m a t i c narration. this regency romance is read with the same theatrics as a child's bedtime story, with eXagGeRaTeD dialogue and stagy pacing. even sped up to 1.10x the listening experience felt like it was dragging through molasses. might be worth skipping the audiobook and getting a digital copy for people with the time to sit down and read to themselves

Historia
AFTER THEIR UNEXPECTED MEETING AT PEMBERLEY, Elizabeth Bennet believes that she and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy have been afforded a second chance at love. Even with the news of Lydia Bennet's elopement with George Wickham could surely only delay their happily ever after. After his visit to Longbourn in the autumn, Mr. Darcy must go to London but promises to return within a fortnight. Elizabeth does not doubt an engagement will result then once he returns.

DNF - Col Fitz wildly OOC
Revisado: 10-04-24
darcy giving in to family objections after already establishing a real relationship with lizzie was a variation i was eager to explore. I love some good angst and hurt/comfort. however, several things stood out to me early on as bad signs regarding characterizations and story telling
1) darcy folded like a wet paper towel. it took one confrontation with his family for him to decide lizzie wasn't worth it (after already spending a year in canon deciding she *was* worth it). this seems out of character for a man who has been holding his own as master of a massive estate since he was in his early 20s
2) col fitz is almost as bad as lady Catherine regarding darcy/lizzie, but for different reasons. lady c is clearly only worried about Anne while col fitz has different concerns, but he is just as bullheaded about them. col fitz isn't strongly developed in canon, but that kind of behavior seems at odds with a man who is often characterized (even in this book) as incredibly close to Darcy
3) the author often tells instead of shows. as mentioned above, darcy folds after one argument with his whole family at one time. a better way to go about this would have been separate arguments with different members, so we can really see them whittling away at his resolve. and what leads to the argument is Lady C having an almost omniscient understanding of darcy and lizzies relationship to that moment. she just drops a bunch of exposition on the fitzwilliam clan to incite the initial argument and dips out. the author wanted a "spark" moment to set off the explosions, but didn't go about actually setting up the explosives
it could get better later on, but I couldn't get past maybe ch 12? I'm a col fitz lover and this characterization was so out of left field that, on top of everything else, my suspension of disbelief just completely collapsed

absolutely loved this fleshed-out take on Jane, on her brief romance with Bingley, and on what a happy future for her looks like. the development of her own romance alongside lizzie and darcy re-kindling their own felt completely natural, as did the growth within the Bennett family. I hope to see more from this other in the future, especially if they continue to focus on side characters that other variations often ignore!

a cute story, but Darcy is an ass sometimes

I can let the asshole behavior go in most situations, but when they're traveling and she's tired and not wearing fancy nightclothes and he throws a hissy fit to rival Lydia? ya that got a lil too ridiculous

Already good, but the twist made it fantastic
Revisado: 09-19-22
for fans of the podcast, you can easily hear the author's "voice" in the writing - it definitely feels like Alaina telling us a story. this familiarity and trust that she's built with her audience (myself included) allowed me to overlook some minor personal ticks while listening.
one such tick was using very specific, dated reference as pop culture/news references in the story. in most cases, editors will catch this and remove them, as they tend to hinder a story more than help.
however, I found that I actually enjoyed knowing the specific "time" this story was happening. it helped ground it and almost make it real. I'm also very interested to get my hands on a physical copy and dive deeper into those references and how they interact with The Twist in chapter 28 (i believe). iykyk. I can already see myself dissecting this book way too much. someone get my in touch with a book club asap
The Twist made me sit down and just think for like 10 solid minutes. just working my brain through all the lil connection points and muddy waters to clear it all up. 12/10 great job
the ending, on the other, got me so amped up I feel like I could run a marathon (I very much cannot). there had BETTER be a sequel. I know Alaina said she's already working on one but I want confirmation of publication contract!! I NEED it 😫😫

Revisado: 05-11-21
its a good book and a great performance, don't get me wrong. but the prince actually had a pretty small role in the list book up until the last few chapters. given the title and reviews from fellow romance lovers, I expected much more interaction between Jude and Cardan throughout the novel, so I wanted to give others a lil heads up that this is more "Jude" than "Jude and Cardan"

Taken from her home as a young child, Elizabeth Bennet’s sense of self is shaken when the mystery behind her true identity is unraveled. Discovering her place as the daughter of a duke, she confronts reclaimed memories of her brutal abduction, while making her way in the alien world of Regency England’s high society. out of character interpretations
Revisado: 09-23-20
The concept intrigued me, but Elizabeth and Darcy were very out of character. At first I was willing to accept it - thinking that the interesting plot and enough time would soothe the jarring of moments of "oh absolutely not. no way would (whoever) say that."
Unfortunately, by the time I got to chapter 9 it was just too much. I would get into to details for fear of spoilers, but both of them are far more emotionally expressive in this retelling than in the original work.
Listening to Liz have another emotional breakdown or Darcy carelessly fling around a potentially life-ruining and jealousy-based accusation for the 2nd or 3rd time was just too much. Maybe it eases up as the book progresses, but it was so overwhelming in thr first 8 chapters that I can't bring myself to spend the time finding out.

Historia
A tempestuous acquaintance and disastrous marriage proposal makes it unlikely Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet will ever reconcile. Despairing of their own reunion, they attend with great energy to salvaging that of Darcy’s friend Mr. Bingley and Elizabeth’s sister Jane. People are rarely so easily maneuvered in and out of love, however, they follow a series of misunderstandings, both willful and unwitting, that complicates all four star-crossed lovers’ alliances more than ever before.
