I love the humor amidst the drama
Revisado: 12-14-24
One of the best stories in the series. The book is well written, entertaining, and balanced mix of serious and humor. I would happily listen again. The performance is well done too.

captures the character
Revisado: 11-07-24
A well written story that weaves the making of a villian while still having a sympathetic character. A couple of the character's decisions felt forced by the author, but overall it was engaging.

good easy listen
Revisado: 10-02-24
Smooth prose, a decent ending and likable characters makes this wrap up of the series a good one. However, I found some of the characters' reactions were lacking realism and some repetitive phrases.

Good twist of fantasy and history
Revisado: 07-03-24
I really liked this fantasy recreation of the end of the viking age. It reminded me of the Norse Sagas. I thought the author captured the acceptance of fate in Norse culture.

good prequel
Revisado: 06-17-24
After listening to the first series, I really enjoyed this prequel. I felt it was the best written of the author's books. The characters made sense as "before" and also helped me better understand them in their later forms. Also, the book had good flow, development and held my interest.

okay with moments of genius
Revisado: 05-05-24
It was an okay overall storyline. The writing itself is pretty good. I feel torn between moments in the storyline which were on the edge of brilliant and other moments which were almost painful. I kept listening because of those moments of brillance.

Historia
Edward I is familiar to millions as "Longshanks", conqueror of Scotland and nemesis of Sir William Wallace (in Braveheart). Yet this story forms only the final chapter of the king's action-packed life. Earlier, Edward had defeated and killed the famous Simon de Montfort, traveled to the Holy Land, and conquered Wales. He raised the greatest armies of the Middle Ages and summoned the largest parliaments. Notoriously, he expelled all the Jews from his kingdom.

Historia
The Academy of Chaenbalu has stood against magic for centuries. Hidden from the world, acting from the shadows, it trains its students to detect and retrieve magic artifacts, which it jealously guards from the misuse of others. Because magic is dangerous: Something that heals can also harm, and a power that aids one person may destroy another. Of the academy’s many students, only the most skilled can become Avatars - warrior thieves, capable of infiltrating the most heavily guarded vaults - and only the most determined can be trusted to resist the lure of magic.

the story line was a little too derivited for my taste, but the writing itself was above average and the characters were likable and engaging. The setting had some nice twists. I enjoyed most of it, and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Historia
Daisy McCrae's life is in tatters. She's lost her job, broken up with her boyfriend, and has been reduced to living in the attic above her family's store, the Union Street Bakery, while learning the business. Making things worse is the constant feeling of not being a "real" McCrae, since she was adopted as a child and has a less-than-perfect relationship with her two sisters. Then a long-standing elderly customer passes away, and for some reason she bequeaths to Daisy a journal dating back to the 1850s...
