Historia
Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

An Antidote to Despair
Revisado: 10-13-23
I don't believe I have ever read a book that has such potential for a plethora of applications. This book is a social commentary, a text for an anti-racism study group, an entry point to inter-generational conversations, a perfect read for those struggling to find meaning and purpose in this harsh world...just to list the most obvious. Professionally, I will use it in several of those ways, but personally, I will return to walk in my mind's eye with these beautiful friends on days when I need such friendship.
For now, I will ask Alexa to play some cello music, and I will pull up a chair and listen until the world feels more in balance.
My gratitude to Ms. Hyde for offering so much wisdom encased in such a beautiful story. May we all have eyes to see what you have offered to us.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Spectacular read
Revisado: 08-31-23
The author does a brilliant read of this compelling novel that spans three generations. The weaving of storylines is matched by the beauty of the prose. There is a lot of heartbreak but there is also great beauty and love. It takes a great writer to execute such a balance. This is one of those books that you immediately recommend to a friend.
My only tiny regret with this read was the last scene. I felt it fell short, but that was ok as I just wrote my own ending in my head. Easy to do with such an immersive read.

Painful listen
Revisado: 02-18-22
If you want to fast as a way of improving your health, this might be a necessary piece to suffer through. I gained some good information that has made my process easy to start and continue. But agree with other reviews that the level of repetitiveness is unacceptable. And the narrator is beyond bad. I made it through by increasing the speed to the highest level I could and still understand the words.

Horrible
Revisado: 07-20-21
This created anxiety where there hadn't been any. The narrator asks questions but doesn't even pause for reflection. I made it to five minutes in and was moved from calm to completely irritated.

Relentless
Revisado: 02-18-21
Only finished this because it was for book club. Finally liked a character (Rosemary) but that was a fleeting chapter. The reader had all the females sound like doe eyed incompetents. She read the 8 year old boy like a post-pubescent teen. Not sure she had a great deal to work with though. If you like depressing books, then maybe it will suit, otherwise, take a pass.

The gift of another's truth
Revisado: 01-29-21
Engaging storytelling; a composite of an insider's truth into the complex world of growing up in South Africa told with witty charm and a rawness to awaken the most complacent of white readers.
A great companion to other books you may be reading to be an informed anti-racist.

Very engaging. Learned about a lot more than just anout caffeine. I wonder if those working for climate change legislation could more closely link their arguments to the 2050 prediction as the demise date for coffee, would we see greater progress?

An annoying drudgery
Revisado: 02-28-20
I only finished it because my book club was reading it. The characters were not engaging or believable. In the beginning they seemed like 11 year olds and by the end, their voices were so overwritten as to have me moaning audibly while driving. And then there is the storyline, which was troubling without anyone seeming to realize how deeply messed up the main character was.
Just horrible book all the way around.
